What are the main causes of lead exposure in LMICs? A new paper by colleagues at @PureEarthNow and other leading researchers reviews the scientific literature regarding measured contributions to elevated blood lead levels from individual sources.

Relevance: Imagine predicting where children face lead poisoning risks—without a single blood test. AI models using housing age, poverty rates, and census data could make it possible. @PureEarthNow could leapfrog testing barriers and prevent poisoning more efficiently in LMICs.

"Predicting Childhood Lead Exposure at an Aggregated Level Using Machine Learning." AI forecasted high-risk areas using group data, improving surveillance and targeting.

Relevance: Researchers built an AI model using basic WIC program and housing data to predict childhood lead poisoning risk more accurately than traditional methods. This shows how low-cost, existing data in LMICs could be used to target interventions without expensive BLL tests.

"Validation of a Machine Learning Model to Predict Childhood Lead Poisoning." Random forest AI predicted blood lead levels better than traditional models using Chicago WIC data.

Relevance: AI models using basic home data (e.g. paint, dust, and property values) could potentially help prioritize high-risk homes in LMICs where inspection resources are scarce, helping @PureEarthNow and government partners target remediation faster and more cost-effectively.

"Using Artificial Intelligence to Identify Sources and Pathways of Lead Exposure in Children." AI models predicted lead risks in rural Illinois homes using environmental and tax data.

The lead poisoning community has been pretty quiet on the potential uses of AI to predict and prevent lead exposure, but that doesn't mean no one is working on it. Here are a couple of interesting applications that @pureearthnow is following. 🧵.

The government of Bangladesh is taking lead poisoning seriously, and our Bangladesh office, @PureEarthBD, is actively helping private, public, and civil society stakeholders advance solutions. I'm so excited about this team and the work they are doing.

The study provides evidence supporting a causal link between lead exposure and PAD, strengthening the argument that lead exposure is not merely correlated but may directly contribute to the development of PAD.

PAD is a serious condition where arteries to your limbs (usually the legs) narrow or block, cutting blood flow. It can cause leg pain, weakness, cold feet, and sores. Untreated, it can lead to amputation, heart attack, or stroke.
