In court you’re charged with second degree manslaughter of sandwich. I’m sorry, you say. But how can a sandwich be manslaughtered? The judge removes his glasses, rubs his eyes. Let’s make that first degree, he says & bangs his gavel. The prosecutor squeaks shriek of delight.

You lie on a bed beneath a blanket made of shivering mice. Each mouse holds another’s tail, paws wrapped around tail as firmly as another mouse holds its tail. Slowly, though it’s freezing & though the world grows colder each night, the shivering stops & you all warm each other.

You get down on one knee & hold out an open jewelry box containing a ring & propose to the Moon. The Moon accepts your proposal. You take the ring & extend your arm, trying to put the ring onto the Moon, only then realizing how far away the Moon really is.

You rip up the cobblestones & beneath them you discover a new & newly familiar grief.

You tickle a cricket until he changes into a rat.

Inside a snowglobe you battle a horse made of thorns.

You take a box full of spiders to the spiderbank & deposit them into your account. And while you’re there you have a cashiers check made out to a cow to whom you owe forty spiders. The walls are lined with soda machines. The only soda available is called The Deepest Well.

A tiny lit candle sits within your ribs. Through holes in your body you never knew were there, the outside world tries to sneak in & blow your candle out. All the outside world wants is to extinguish your flame. You flee & flee the outside world, trying to keep your candle lit.
