Freeze on jobseekers pay-related benefit in the Social Welfare Bill is yet another anti-worker budget measure. Govt must show the same willingness to address this for workers as it did for developers in amending the Finance Bill to broaden the VAT cut on apartments. Statement👇

The average employee in Dublin earns €49,500. A newly qualified teacher earns under €42,500. A nurse just over €37,000 and a garda less than €39,000, if not doing shift work. None of them meet the (€56,000) minimum salary requirement for a one-bedroom ‘affordable’ apartment.

Big change in Sinn Fein pension policy by Pearse Doherty on @RTENewsAtOne. No longer looking to cut the State Pension age to 65 for everyone. Now looking for a return of the old Transition Pension for 65 year olds who retired (and meet strict PRSI conditions. Few qualified).

Workers have already began paying extra PRSI to keep the pension age at 66. The current 0.2 rate increase will amount to an extra €104 contribution over next year on average. From 2028, an extra €1.6bn PRSI will be contributed annually towards keeping the pension sustainable.

Out of the €8m written off last year, €4.5m related to the State pension. While overpayments (money going to people not entitled to it) at any level are unacceptable, overpayments represent less than 0.5% of DSP’s annual budget, the vast bulk of which is recouped.

Next look at the impact of profits on prices. European Central Bank research - firm profits accounted for two-thirds of the increase in inflation in eurozone. Irish Central Bank research - profits contributed significantly to domestic price rises. Wages contribution was flat.
