When your browser requests a web asset (e.g. index.html) from the IC, its chain key signature is embedded in a HTTP response header. Currently, you need some software on your phone or laptop to transparently verify (dfinity/http-proxy) but expect innovation to obviate... 🧵

Of course, an offchain wallet or financial service can also validate the results of its calls to onchain software, since chain key signature verification code has the NNS' public 48-byte key baked in. Security and TRUSTLESSNESS at last.. 🧵

For example, an internet-connected fridge (IoT) might ask a service on the IC if a software upgrade was available. If new software was returned, the fridge could validate its call/tx signature to verify that it came from the onchain service & no tampering occurred.. 🧵

Thus, every tx result is signed by chain key. Anyone who knows the 48-byte public key of the NNS (known ahead of time, and constant for all time) can validate any tx signature. Valid signatures tell you both that the tx executed, and that it produced the result received... 🧵

Each subnet (essentially a special kind of chain used to scale) has its own such key, which is signed/validated by the NNS. Through a system of Merkle paths, the result of every tx processed by a subnet is signed using the subnet's key... 🧵

Dapp operators soon found it was much easier to use nodes run by others, whom they TRUSTED, such as Infura, run by ConsenSys on AWS. This was why when AWS once went down, so did a large segment of the Ethereum ecosystem. A security breach at Infura would be much worse... 🧵

In practice, of course, running and maintaining Ethereum nodes became increasingly expensive and time consuming, especially as the chain grew in size. The "most" decentralized architecture possible for dapps & wallets (before fully onchain/ICP) fell out of fashion... 🧵

When Ethereum launched, the idea was those building dapps would put the UX and compute on cloud, say. alongside a dedicated node that this offchain infra could use to stay in sync with onchain "smart contact" software & data, avoiding the need for more centralized trust, but.. 🧵

The only way to avoid this kind of thing was to run your own Bitcoin client/nofe that stayed in sync with the latest blocks, and use that to query balances quickly. But of course, that was a hassle... 🧵
