October was a lesson. Since then, I’ve moved from Granada to Alicante with the support of friends, family, and mi amor—a fellow physician, ortho-trauma surgeon in Alicante who loves me and is proud of me. He’s inspired me to pursue my dream of medicine in Spain, while in tech.

Then COVID came and one of the district hospitals offered me to be the medical director. I refused. Instead I studied a fellowship diploma in Geriatric Rehab and went to Spain 😅🤣😂. And found love in Spain in the form of an ortho trauma surgeon 😅🤣😂.

Then I came home to my province and was appointed 1 of the 2 internist specialists in a DOH government hospital and one of the 2 internist specialists in the province. I proceeded to get an MPH.

I worked in that GIDA setup for 2 years, being the only doctor on the island. Afterward, I went back to Manila to do my Master’s in Pharmacology. That path led me to clinical trials for a foreign pharmaceutical company.

I was everything: OB, pediatrician, surgeon… you name it. • Airlifted critical cases to Manila when surgery wasn’t possible • Sutured stab wounds and hack wounds • Delivered twins without ultrasound • Managed patients without X-ray • Relied solely on my steth and skills

After finishing my residency in Internal Medicine, I applied as a medical officer in Manila… and ended up being sent to a GIDA area — an island 8 hours by ship from Luzon. For a month, I was literally the only doctor in the district hospital.

I’m the go-to for complicated diabetics, hypertensives, pneumonias, heart failures — all of it • When the OR is open, all surgical clearances go through me • My phone is basically the hotline for medical dilemmas 😅

People ask what being “the only internist” actually means. It means: • Every complex adult case eventually lands on my plate • MOs run the ER/wards, but I’m the consult-on-call brain behind tough decisions • I interpret the scary ECGs • I handle unstable patients

No surgeries for us and no cardiopulmonary clearances and referrals to you. This is a district government hospital where there are limited OB Gyne and anesthesia specialists and ONLY me as an internist 😅 appointed by the Province

While dining at a steakhouse, I met my two colleagues: an OB Gyne and anesthesiologist couple. Me: Hey, why are you here? Him: The same reason why you are here 😁 Me: Remind me 🤪 Her: The operating room is still under renovation. So no surgeries for the next 30 days.

I have 2 degrees which I applied homologación for in Spain: 1. Grado en Biología Sanitaria / Tecnologías Biomédicas / Ciencias Biosanitarias 2. Doctor of Medicine
