#JNeurosci: @docdocdunk et al. explored the neural processes for ignoring visual distractions, discovering that, over time, the brain learns to quickly suppress neural activity linked to locations with a high probability of containing a distractor. https://t.co/cUMDlI0mZJ

So unfortunately putting a spanish audiobook on before going to sleep wont teach me spanish 😔. Theres a bunch of other small findings showing some quirks when using statistical learning in a serial search task (an unusual search mode for our lab 🙃). Check it out!

But ultimately if participants are able to effectively ignore a stimuli, then they will not encode any regularities tied to this item. So attention is an essential ingredient for learning of statistical properties to occur!

Through a series of studies we show first that an incredibly small amount of attention is all that is needed for learning to occur (given adequate sample sizes are collected)

We sought to answer this question in regards to visual statistical learning, where a great deal of work has recently shown that our attention system encodes the regularities of a visual task and relies on this information to improve our attentional behavior

since the early years of studying statistical learning in early language acquisition, it was an open question whether this learning depends on attention to occur. ( Can you learn a language by just listening to tons of recordings in the background of your daily life?)

Statistical learning is the remarkable human ability to incidentally encode regularities from our environment. This is most strikingly familiar in the case of language acquisition, but it also occurs for visual stimuli.

Happy to see this paper finally out now in PBR! @Psychonomic_Soc In it we ask whether statistical learning can occur for unattended items: it is already well known that learning can alter attention, but does attention also alter learning? https://t.co/6mEBLS4h2b
