And exercise as punishment kills! In our research 37% n=16 of high school & college football EHS fatalities were tied to exertion as punishment. Effectively the death penalty was levied for a perceived sin, ie, being late, poor effort, etc. Exertion as punishment is indefensible.
If you use exercise as punishment, you are just teaching your athletes to hate exercise. It's lazy. It shifts the athlete to avoidance motivation. And research shows such a style actually leads to worse discipline. So let's just stop.
