Lastly, not everyone displays this, but many do: the Just-World Fallacy - the belief that bad things happen only to those who 'deserve' it. It's a way of reassuring ourselves that disasters aren't random things that could strike us. Look out for it in a comments section near you.

Fourth: Normalcy Bias. It's hard to comprehend this till you've experienced it but we tend to underestimate danger and assume things will stay normal, even when warning signs appear. Afterwards we just can't understand why people didn't immediately grasp the situation.

Third: The Illusion of Superiority. This one we all have. It's the bit of us that ignores the mountains of evidence of how most people behave in emergencies and instead believes we would be the ones who stay calm and act rationally. Maybe we would, but the odds say otherwise.

Second: Fundamental Attribution Error. This is the tendency to explain other people’s behaviour by their character (they are 'stupid' or 'irresponsible') rather than the overwhelming situation they’re in. It ignores more likely factors such as panic and disbelief.

First up, Hindsight Bias. This is the tendency to believe - after a disaster - that events were more predictable than they really were. It's combined with illusion that, rather than reacting with fear, confusion, or paralysis, you would have reacted with clarity and composure.

Perhaps today is a good time for people to familiarise themselves with Disaster Hindsight Bias. It's a heady combination of cognitive and social‑psychological biases that you tend to see at moments like this. If you're interested, read on...
