The simplest way to START validating the #motherlanguages of our students is to learn how to pronounce their names! Your comfort doesn’t have a role here, it’s not about you, it’s about recognizing them for who they are in their own culture.
adult to adult: I didn’t know you speak another language! awesome & so useful. Meanwhile: emergent bilinguals are stripped of their #MotherLanguage How do students experience language in school, how is it valued & affirmed, what messages are sent implicitly/ explicitly?
