One question I still have is efforts by people in Benin to return more to traditional culture, and another is efforts to become more economically independent #USAafr23.

One thing I learned more about was how Benin continues to be dependent on France economically, and also how radically Beninese culture was shaped by European colonization #USAafr23.

This picture is culturally significant to me and reflects my identity/values because it's a photo of my family. Us spending time together is very important to me, and my family has been a huge force in shaping me into the person I am today #AFRusa23

Lanterns are a source of light within a dark world. It's powerful to see the physical symbol of the lanterns serving as a representation of togetherness, resilience, hope, and light for this community, even as they came out of the very dark history of slavery and racism #AFRusa23.

The Lantern Walk fulfilled this because carrying the lanterns all together was a symbol of community unity, and the stopping points being a school (education), a church (faith), and a cemetery (family, history, life and death) symbolize areas of deep significance #AFRusa23

We started at the Mobile County Training School to listen to the stories of alumni there and sing. The second picture is the church where we met after completing the first leg of the lantern walk, before we crossed the street to visit the Old Plateau Cemetary (3rd and 4th pics).

In chapter 3 of our textbook, we learned that slavery was a huge factor of economic development for Europe - especially for Britain. This led to a market for enslaved Africans - millions were enslaved and millions more died during the journey of the Triangle Trade. #AFRusa23.

According to Britannica, diplomacy is "the established method of influencing the decisions and behaviour of foreign governments and peoples through dialogue, negotiation, and other measures short of war or violence" ( #AFRusa23.

The Triangle Trade was a system of trade between the Americas, Africa, and Europe in the 16th-19th centuries. #AFRusa23

Darryl Fears is a journalist who studies both environmental issues and racism (especially how these two are connected). His investigations prove how the racism of the past is still heavily negatively affecting Black communities in the present. #AFRusa23.

One of the most striking things about this exhibit is the resilience of African American communities during the Jim Crow Era. The Lewis, Owens, and Griffin families faced tremendous opposition, and yet they "kept fighting and kept fighting" to build a better life #AFRusa23

For the most part, Blacks were intended to be the subjects of sociology, and not sociologists to the extent that they would formulate theory. "Black Sociology, 1890-1917" by RS Jones (Black Academy Review, 1971) #AFRusa23.

Today's lesson is about sociology. We learned about the difference between White and Black sociology, especially how White sociology is more theoretical, but Black sociology is more practical (focusing on using sociology as a tool for social change/racial equality) #AFRusa23

Loved visiting the Ancient Africa, Enslavement, & Civil War museum! Very important history that we're learning. The simulation activity was super intense, but insightful (even if it was only a sliver of what it was actually like). Love all the hands-on stuff we're doing #AFRusa23
