My parents got married in 1968, and went to @Dooky_Chase that evening. As they told me, it was the only fancier restaurant in New Orleans where Blacks were allowed to dine. Last night, my vaccinated parents returned. It was my dad’s first social outing since the pandemic started.

Another of my favorite soulful pioneers has moved to the next phase. Hamilton Bohannon started as a 1960s drummer for Motown acts (including Little Stevie Wonder). In the 70s, he perfected his trademark four-on-the-floor style and released an album each year through the mid 80s.

Caldwell never stopped writing, playing, and touring to large crowds, thanks to that now-classic hit, but also not solely because of that hit. Importantly, he remained devoted to soulful music with a discography of excellent albums. May @bobbycaldwell rest peacefully.

I don't understand why over 10 police cars and over 40 police officers are needed for a complaint against a brass band playing music on Frenchmen St! Also, why are people complaining (still) against brass bands playing music on Frenchmen St. Or ANYWHERE in New Orleans?

Showing him as a shadowy silhouette on the cover guaranteed no one would know Caldwell’s soulful voice belonged to a white man til the word was out. The single, “What You Won’t Do For Love,” became a top 10 R&B hit, endearing him with a devoted Black fan base through his career.

She “won” her lawsuit, but “the industry” blacklisted her. This happens to artists all the time, though most don’t win or even have opportunity or drive (or energy or 💰) to sue. If you’re a woman or Black, a Black woman, or a Black Latina (as she was), results are much worse.

I think it’s time to give the history lesson about how, in original hip hop culture (1970s), the DJ was at the top of the pyramid, and the role of the MC was to support the DJ - not the other way around.

Newly released, and excellent. So well researched, and full of stories. Prince fans will appreciate the story of him featuring Rufus Thomas as one of his aftershow concert guests in Memphis.

She did wind up winning her lawsuit and a hefty sum upwards of $1 mill. But the industry powers, who did not take nicely to young Black women demanding their rights in the 80s, did a number on her career, and you can’t buy that back. She writes about whether she saw that 💰 too.

Update: I'm safe. According to weather outside my Virgin Hotel window, storm is over. I don't know impact yet. No one in N.O. has power. Hotel generator is for emergency hall lights and elevator. There is wifi here and I'm on charged laptop. City may be w/o power for weeks? Pray.

Heartbreaker. Another of our New Orleans soulful pioneers has passed. I’m honored to have personally thanked him for his music. May he rest peacefully. My deepest condolences to his family and extended music family.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Minnie Riperton lately. It’s Black History Month so, artistry aside, I’d like to discuss her heroic work as an advocate for breast cancer education and early detection.
