So...UPS...Fedex...big opportunity here. Just offer to deliver any election ballot for free...or honor the postage on it...and get it there by Election Day. You'll overnight become the most beloved and respected organization in America. Go on...it's the right thing to do.
The richest guy on the 2021 Forbes 400 owns the Washington Post. Number 2 now owns Twitter. Number 3 owns Facebook. Numbers 5 and 6 started Google. Numbers 4 and 9 started Microsoft. Number 10 owns Bloomberg. Free speech? You decide.
I'm lying awake here tonight because I honestly can't fathom how we have gotten to the point that the leader of the GOP, the last SecState, some of the party's most vocal members & a major US TV network all are actively taking Russia's side in a conflict with America & the West.
For a guy who has been a Senator, Vice President and President, you've got to admit,
@JoeBiden
is probably the most consistently, repeatedly and unfairly underestimated political leader of our time.
The chief of staff to the Vice President of the United States reached out to the Secret Service about a threat he perceived might come from...the President of the United States. If we had not lost all sense of perspective, this would be utterly blowing our minds right now.
History may look back at the period in which we are living and call it The Great Regression. It is a time in which on issue after issue, we are seeing decades and sometimes centuries of progress reversed. We have never seen anything like this before in our history.
It's the racism. But it's not just the racism. It's sex crimes. But it's not just the sex crimes. It's the concentration camps. But it's not just the concentration camps. It's the corruption. But it's not just the corruption.
The president of the United States sat in the Oval Office last night discussing the clearly seditious suggestion of a convicted felon that he send in US troops and void the last presidential election. Alarms should be sounding. We've never faced a danger like this man.
Something broke in America this week. We have been spiraling downward since Trump's election, but this week, we crossed a line. The President and his men began asserting that they were above the law--and effectively no one in our system did anything to stop them.
Trump has never won the popular vote in an election, lost the House, lost the Senate, impeached twice, lost more than 60 court cases challenging last election, lost in Supreme Court trying to hide his taxes, lost while actually owning casinos, lost 500K lives to COVID.
I'm a scorched earth Dem. Win WH & both houses in Nov. Work to make DC & PR states. Impeach judges who got jobs through false pretenses or w/o qualifications. Rethink structure of courts that have been rigged. Investigate & hold accountable Trump Admin.
This is just my old guy in DC intuition kicking in here, but I think the really disturbing part of the George Santos story has yet to be told. It's not that he is a clownish fraud or an extremist freak show. Someone picked him to run, funded him, gave him support. Who? Why?
If you think that Putin's brutality in Ukraine, Orban's so-called "election" in Hungary, Vucic's election in Serbia, LePen's campaign in France, or GOP efforts to attack democracy are unrelated stories, you don't understand the current global battle between autocracy & democracy.
My mother aced the last cognitive test she was given. Shortly before she died at the beginning of last year, the nurse asked "Who is the president?" My mother's last words, proving her absolute mental clarity to the end were, "Trump--I hate him."
It's the guns, but it's not just the guns. It's the racism, but it's not just the racism. It's the misogyny, but it's not just the misogyny. It's the attacks on democracy but it's not just the attacks on democracy.
I'm not going to win any points for saying this but the Biden Admin international team has been doing exceptional work from the outset. They have restored international standing, strengthened alliances, rejoined multilateral institutions, elevated US diplomacy.
In '20,
@JoeBiden
was second guessed by many (me included). He wasn't exciting. Too old school. Talked about healing. Talked about a clear agenda when the other side had little to offer but hate & good TV ratings. And he won decisively despite the skepticism of the "smart money."
Those of you calling for Stephen Miller to be fired by the White House because he has been revealed (again) to be a white supremacist do not understand that's the reason why he was hired.
The degree to which our highest court is currently debating whether the president is above the law, is a king, should be deeply disturbing to everyone.
If you are the White House "source" for a report that the president was sitting in the Oval Office discussing sending in troops to void the election and you are not on national television reporting what you saw, you don't understand what you witnessed or heard about.
I believe Trump should be impeached. I believe Barr should be impeached. I believe McConnell should be impeached. I believe Jared and Ivanka should be stripped of their security clearances and fired. I believe Trump Administration officials who ignore subpoenas should be jailed.
If there is, as there seems to be in Oregon & as we saw in DC, an effort to introduce a secret police into US life then it is the obligation of everyone in the media, in the government, in the courts, to do what we can to expose it, stop it, and punish those responsible for it.
I've worked in DC and in and around politics most of my adult life. Here are a bunch of reasons I have concluded along the way I could never be a politician:
1.) I believe the US Constitution is in need of a big overhaul, is profoundly out of date in key ways & flawed in others.
History will look back and determine that the fact Trump got this far into his presidency without being impeached was a serious failure of the nature and character of the U.S. Congress and a sign our checks and balances do not work nearly as well as they should.
President Trump incited a mob to storm the Capitol to overturn the results of an American election.
That's not an exaggeration. Don't tell me this has not been a coup attempt. Don't tell me Trump is not an enemy of the United States. He has been since Day 1.
Worst health crisis in a century. Worst unemployment crisis ever. Worst crisis in the streets in more than 50 years. US an international pariah, rejected by the club of democracies we helped create, the global order we sought to build for 75 yrs in shambles. That's where we are.
I’m not a Christian. But I can read. And as far as I can tell Jesus was supposed to be the most woke guy who ever lived and to be anti-woke is the most un-Christian thing imaginable.
What an embarrassing display by the White House press corps. Over and over and over they asked the president about his comment that Putin should not remain in power. He said he was expressing his moral outrage and not signaling a policy change. His answer could not be clearer.
This will not end well for Jared. His past efforts have resulted in contempt for him. This one, with lives at stake, here in the US, will result in him becoming one of the most reviled public figures in modern memory in this country.
Let's not beat around the bush, decision by the Supreme Court to hear the Trump immunity case is outrageous and, at its heart, fundamentally corrupt. The Appeals Court decision was bullet proof and there is no case Trump has any sort of immunity. The decision not to hear it until…
If
@ewarren
were a man and conducted herself as she just did in that
@msnbc
town hall, no one would utter a word about electability. She was sensational...again. I've seen the same, by the way, from
@KamalaHarris
. Stop this electability nonsense. These are first class leaders.
If the president is letting a Chinese madam sell access at Mar-a-Lago to Chinese business people while his friends are getting serviced at businesses she started, he is exposing himself and the country to massive blackmail risk. Surely the IC and FBI are aware of this.
It is impossible to read this exceptional
@NYTimes
story on Trump's taxes & not conclude he is a crook, his kids are crooks, his companies are badly mismanaged & his financial future is precarious. His creditors own him. We need to know who they are.
Imagine if 250,000 people had died in a war over the past 7 months & there were predictions another 200,000 would die in the next four months. And the Commander-in-Chief had abandoned his post, just walked away. (After greatly contributing to the losses we'd already incurred.)
Beating Trump in November is not the goal. It is not even the minimum acceptable outcome. The GOP is the problem. The GOP must be defeated in both the Senate and the House. The GOP must be defeated up and down the ballot. Don't lose sight of this. Work for it daily.
Stealthily, without proportionate recognition, Joe Biden is not just having a good presidency, he's having one that is historic in its concrete achievements and successes. The fair & balanced types in the media won't characterize it fairly because to do so, would "feel" biased.
Dear MAGA World,
Ever since your buddy Elon opened the floodgates to allow you to overrun this site, we've gotten to see much more of you, understand you better. And I want to be frank, it's not a good look. It's not just that you are wrong about so much or that you're so cruel.
The military is not funded. The government is not funded. There is no relief for a nation suffering health care and economic catastrophes. But Paul Manafort, Roger Stone and Jared's Dad are celebrating. Never doubt who the Trump Administration and the GOP serve.
Axios: White House officials are so worried that president is out of his mind and will destroy our democracy that they whispered about their anxiety to a reporter.
I woke up very early today. I could not sleep. While it sounds melodramatic to say it, it is because I came away from yesterday's Kavanaugh hearing feeling more acutely than ever that something is profoundly wrong with the way our country works.
Common MAGA argument is “Putin didn’t invade Ukraine under Trump. Which means he saw Trump as strong.” Nonsense. Under Trump he didn’t have to invade. Trump was doing more to remove the NATO threat than an invasion could.
It's not the "nuclear option" to get rid of the filibuster. It is returning Senate procedure to where it has been for most of history. The filibuster is the aberration. Majority rule is the norm.
So,
@NBCNews
is presenting a Trump town hall opposite a Biden town hall? Do I have that right? They are forcing audiences to choose which candidate to watch? Isn't that serving Trump's agenda? Couldn't they have chosen a different time?
We are the assets of
@Twitter
. If we walk out the door the moment
@ElonMusk
takes it over, it is nothing. And, I can tell you, I for one, have no desire to participate in the social engineering experiment of that particular out-of-control megalomaniac.
Dear Progressive Friends,
Joe Biden may not be Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders. However he may well be the most progressive US president since FDR & in many ways, he is much more progressive than him. He can make more progressive change happen. Help him, don't fight him.
Rosenstein is a good guy.
Mueller is a hero who will save us.
Barr is an institutionalist.
Pompeo is one of the grown-ups.
Tillerson is a weakling.
Ivanka and Jared are moderating influences.
Mattis will stand up and save us.
Perhaps we need a mass resignation of pundits.
Listening to the SCOTUS today was a gut punch. Not only was it the near certainty that a group of extremists were about to succeed in their decades long campaign to take away a basic right of every American woman. It was also that so many of the justices lied to get confirmed.
I'm from NY. We knew Trump was a racist, misogynist, corrupt, shithead since the 1970s.
I'm a writer and commentator about a politics and policy. We warned people that Trump would be a great threat to the United States since 2015.
So, let me tell you this story. There was an arsonist who set a house on fire. Then this fireman came and put out the fire. And then a reporter showed up and saw the fireman surrounded the damage caused by the fire and wrote a story about it suggesting it was the fireman's fault.
Alito is wrong on the law, wrong on the morality, but also, as it happens wrong on the history. For most of the first 250 years since the English colonized the US, abortion was legal prior the quickening, typically 16-20 weeks, when a fetus could be felt to move.
One reason this war for Ukraine resonates so clearly is that it is the rare conflict that is largely without ambiguity. Russia provoked an innocent neighbor without provocation. Their reasons had to do with the virtues of that neighbor country--notably its embrace of democracy.
Right now, the administration is conducting a massive operation in Kabul that has resulted in the evacuation of 50,000 people in eight days. It is also overseeing a life and death battle against COVID that has already resulted in over 200,000,000 Americans receiving the vaccine.
Note to journos: When GOP defeats legislation created to preserve American's fundamental right to vote the story is not "Biden loses"--it is "America is in peril" or "GOP seeks white minority rule." It is part of a bigger story about the systematic GOP attack on our democracy.
Watch what's happening in Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Idaho & other red states that are rapidly becoming fascist dystopias--denying women, people of color, voters, retirees, families, and children their rights. This is America's nightmare now. It is much bigger than Trump.
Trump has always had a deeply troubling relationship with the US intelligence community. At his initial briefings as president, he was uninterested in key revelations and instead used the meeting to press officials for a public denunciation of the Steele dossier.
To those who have called for an "off-ramp" for Putin, I have just one question. Don't you feel ashamed of yourselves? When you look at what is happening in Mariupol, where citizens are being rounded up and kidnapped to Russia, put in camps and forcibly relocated?
Every Republican in the Capitol tonight who voted to let Trump off the hook for trying to extort Ukraine by withholding vital military aid, who defended him when he argued we should draw down troops in NATO, who tried to dismiss his service to Putin...
Many commentators are saying that the House impeachment managers case is so compelling and that it lays out the truth so clearly, that it will become the defining legacy of the Trump presidency. And face it, a president orchestrating a deadly coup attempt is a big deal.
Please, stop with the “Secret Service was sloppy” nonsense. There are two possibilities. Either they broke the law violating their responsibility to preserve records. Or they obstructed justice. And let’s be honest, their behavior suggests the latter.
Your periodic reminder: Trump did collude with Russia. Russia did intervene to help Trump win. Trump did share classified info with Russian officials. Trump did kowtow to Putin, throwing US intel community under the bus at the same time. Trump was impeached for withholding aid…
The jury is not sequestered in the Manafort case. The president is publicly signaling them that he doesn't think Manafort should be convicted. It's an abuse of his position and possibly a crime. We need to reclaim our ability to be shocked, people, or the abuses will get worse.
I'm already having a hard time (about 5 minutes into this particular cycle) of listening to the whitewashing and normalization of McConnell's tenure. This man, more than any individual, is why Roe is gone. This man is the reason Trump can run again. McConnell was awful.
To those of you who are too young to remember Watergate, rest assured, this is worse. Trump is a much less competent, much more dangerous, vastly more corrupt president than Nixon. And this time his co-conspirators are the entire GOP leadership of the Congress.
I'm sensing a crisis in the media due to the competence, transparency & focus on good governance of the administration. Major's behavior, number of press conferences, how often he goes to Delaware & other manufactured controversies are signs of desperation, of click-deprivation.
So we know this, Russian government representatives reached out to the Trump campaign in 2015 and undertook multiple initiatives and had multiple points and series of contacts with Team Trump for the next couple years.
On this day in American history...the most extensive plot to kill senior US government officials and prominent Americans in history took place. It targeted two former presidents, their families, a former Secretary of State, a former head of the CIA, senior members of Congress...
"We will pass critical reforms making every executive branch employee fireable by the president of the United States. The deep state must and will be brought to heel." -- Trump proposes a drastic expansion of presidential power
You want to debate whether the 14th A. applies to Trump or not? Fine. But, please, spare me the takes that somehow it is a bad look for the United States to enforce its laws as they pertain to a president because it might be "divisive." The law is the law. No one is above it.
The Chief Justice of the United States is presiding meekly over a trial that may well have no evidence or witnesses. Thereby, he is lending the gravity of his office and the institution he represents to the wholesale dismantlement of the rule of law in the US. It's obscene.
One of America's two major political parties is, at its core, not just corrupt, not just racist, not just misogynist, not just opposed to truth or science or history. They are, their leaders are, actively enemies of the U.S., our system and what we stand for.
The Biden jobs story isn't just good. It's spectacular. Over 5.5 million jobs created in 10 months. Most recently, the lowest jobless claims in 52 years. And all that before the infrastructure and BBB packages kick in. Something else to be thankful for.
Based on what I've seen recently, I would be perfectly comfortable if all questions for anyone in the Democratic Party were answered by
@PeteButtigieg
. Not that the others aren't capable of it. It's just that recently he has been giving a masterclass in deft, smart answers.
So, it's mean to pick on the Trump "kids?" Don Jr. is 2 yrs older than Teddy Roosevelt was when he became president. Ivanka is 6 yrs older than Sen. Jon Ossoff. Eric is 5 yrs older than Thomas Jefferson was when he wrote the Declaration of Independence (and 6 yrs older than AOC.)
Dear Robert Mueller & Associates,
You know what Stone did. You know how he covered for Trump. You understand why Trump's commutation of his sentence was corrupt, repayment for Stone's silence, a bribe, impeachable. Stand up and say something now. Now.
Thank you,
America
If you're a reporter and you argue that the big election story is the price of gasoline and not the potential end to democracy, you're not doing your job. Here's why:
1.) You determine what the story is by covering it
2.) The end of democracy is profoundly more consequential
So,
@CNN
, quick question: If Trump's already lied about today's verdict & demonstrated he'll keep defaming E. Jean Carroll & you know it, do ya think giving him a platform to repeat those lies exposes you to any liability-not to speak of the disservice it does to your audience?
No one fires even a single shell at a nuclear power plant without thinking of the potential for damage it might do. Consequently, regardless of whether that damage is actually done, this attack is an absolutely heinous act, a pre-meditated invitation to catastrophe.
To a lawyer, the Mueller report describes multiple felonies by the president and some bad acts that might yet be proven to be crimes. To a historian, it describes the greatest betrayal of the United States since the Civil War, and the greatest by a president in our history.
Trump, a guy who's never won the popular vote, twice impeached, rated the worst president ever, serially corrupt, a traitor, rapist, racist, gave the GOP a perfect out on Jan 6. They could've easily just turned the page. But instead they said, "Nope, we'll stick with him."
Hard to say what was the worst part of the CNN debacle: Trump repeating the Big Lie, promising to pardon Jan 6 insurgents, further victimizing E. Jean Carroll, not promising to honor the 2024 election result, not calling Vladimir Putin a war criminal...
Biden's speech is the best any American has made on Afghanistan in 20 years. Because he is finally doing what we should have done long ago and he is doing it with the resolve and confidence of an experienced leader knowing the difficult course was the right course.
This "court packing" nonsense is the Hillary's emails of 2020--a complete distraction cooked up by the GOP to divert attention from their own wrong-doing that the media has fallen for hook, line and sinker.
Woke up this a.m. reading stories about the mess that Biden & Dems had made of this year. Then came news of more job growth--5.5 million new jobs in 9 months. Then, tonight passage of a $1.2 T infrastructure bill and a commitment from House Dems to pass the $1.75 T BBB package.
I'm furious that I am currently vulnerable to being accused of being an anti-Semite because I am not a Zionist. I am a Jew. I am the son of a Holocaust survivor who came a from a family largely exterminated by the Nazis. I love my Jewish heritage. I love that my children and now…
The Taliban, created in 1994, took over the country with lightning speed. They controlled it by 1996. The most powerful nations on earth sent in an army and still after a matter of a relatively few years, the Taliban regained control or contested 30-40% of the country.
It's happening again. It's just as bad. There are even more Republicans working to enable the Russians to help Trump this time. It remains one of the great scandals in our history. And America remains asleep, apathetic to treachery.
Worst moments in U.S. presidential debate history:
5. George H.W. Bush looks at his watch
4. Al Gore sighs
3. Ford forgets where Poland is
2. Nixon sweats
1. Trump embraces racism, rejects science, excuses mass death, spews lies and threatens American democracy
