An ad that will make more sense than the real ads (?).

For the tiny sliver of you interested in my opinions on @mlb baseball or willing to tell your friends who pay attention to baseball, I wrote a very short piece proposing a "skip hitter" as a more reasonable alternative to a golden at-bat:

I’m no fan of this Golden At-Bat idea at all, but you don’t need me to tell you all the reasons it’s a bad idea – there are a lot and you can surely find other people to write about them at length....

Washingtonian here. Pretty simple formula: high minimum wage, best OT policy, paid family leave, working family tax credit, expanded childcare, high road employers, top research institutions, diverse industries, focus on trades, and strong labor unions. Just to name a few. 1/8.

Sunday in America was 25 hours long. Tuesday will be 500 hours long. I don’t make the rules.

As someone who has spent time making sure his kids root against the Yankees and somehow got them not to storm off when they were up 5-0, the most obnoxious thing I can think to say this morning is that Gerrit Cole lowered his career World Series ERA from 3.15 to 2.36 last night.

Nobody lies to me over email the way, "Last chance to earn bonus air miles" lies to me over email.

Some of my very favorite people are the ones who use all-caps in email subject lines when and only when they should. And no, I don’t have a rubric. I just know. And so do they.

"So, overall, I'd say your perspective is idiotic.". I've never ended an email that way, but I sure have thought about it.

Countdown timers should display both the time remaining and the original amount of time. I will die on this hill.

You know those kids who don't know the Titanic was an actual ship and not just created for a movie?. I fear I'm going to live long enough to meet kids who think Moneyball is about a made-up baseball team.

What if the real Mariners playoff spot was the friends we made along the way. :-(.

A modest proposal to stop calling them faculty ranks and start calling them faculty cranks:. The crank of Assistant Professor. The crank of Associate Professor. The crank of Full Professor. As necessary, claim it's a typo or they misheard you.

In this edition of s@!t senior faculty say, I quote myself, "I will try without promising. Is it okay if you find out on the 19th whether I can get you a report by the 19th?".

If we live in such an amazing world of computing, why do I download a pdf, attach it to an email (in gmail), send the email, then delete the download rather than push a button to do all of the above?. And no, the url from which I do the download, would not work for the recipient.

Are seminal papers approachable in 2024? Prefer mechanics and pragmatics over denotations and metatheory? . Are there primers or textbook chapters? Imagine a few hours of reading (1-2 papers or chapters) not a whole course (as awesome as that would be). TIA (2/2).

PL-research literature question: Imagine a 2024 grad student familiar with operational semantics, types, structural induction but had never heard of continuation-passing style or cps-transform. Need to learn them and the key properties of cps. What should they read? (1/2).
