The big takeaway: Quantum isn’t just microscopic. With careful engineering, it can fill your hand. This realization opened the path to scalable quantum computers and sensors.

This laid the foundation for superconducting qubits. |0⟩ and |1⟩ become energy levels. Tunneling becomes logic gates. Phase control becomes readout.

Measurements confirmed it all: Spectroscopy → quantised levels Time-resolved readout → single quantum jumps Statistics → tunneling rates that rule out classical escape

Keeping that quantum coherence is the hard part. They froze the device near absolute zero and isolated it from noise. Only then do fragile quantum superpositions survive long enough to measure.

Picture throwing a ball at a wall and finding that it appeared on the other side. That’s tunneling and here, it’s happening to billions of electrons moving as one.

Then comes tunneling. Classically impossible jumps happen routinely at the quantum level. They watched the system slip between energy wells, matching theory perfectly.

Just like atoms, this circuit has fixed energy states. Microwave spectroscopy reveals crisp transition lines i.e. the fingerprint of quantisation, but built by engineers.

The trick is the Josephson junction: two superconductors separated by an insulator. Billions of electron pairs flow in sync. Instead of tracking every particle, you describe one collective quantum “phase.”

Their key result: Quantum behavior in a ~1 cm superconducting circuit. Two unmistakable signs: • Discrete energy levels • Quantum tunneling between wells Quantum rules followed by a human-sized object!

Who would've thought a hand-sized circuit could act like an atom? Congrats to John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martinis on the 2025 #NobelPrize in Physics for proving that quantum phenomena can scale up.
