It's real. And it's spectacular. Sometimes, one fossil really can change everything you think you know. NEW PAPER (see bottom of thread) AND 🧵

I wrote a blog post about the giant Temnodontosaurus from Banz, Germany. The 2.3 m long skull is the first known specimen of its kind, and the original 1854 description includes life-sized illustrations of the fossil. #paleontology #Germany #History

I just wrote a little article about Platypterygius hercynicus, one of the most complete Cretaceous ichthyosaurs that has an interesting history and is now on display at the Museum Schloss Salder in Salzgitter, Germany. #FossilFriday #Salzgitter #Germany

A new day a new plesiosaur! The Posidonia shale is a gift that keeps on giving! Please welcome Plesionectes! An animal that looks more like a elasmosaur than an early Jurassic plesiosaur. Here is is shown with the relatives it overlapped with. Paper below

Plesionectes derives from the base of the mid-section of the Posidonia Shale, making it the oldest plesiosaur genus currently known from that formation. 5/5 If you want to learn more about our study, visit my website at:

Plesionectes also has the second highest number of dorsal vertebrae and shows a very unusual and unique combination of characters, plus fossilised samples of soft-tissue at the neck, tail, and hind limbs. 4/5 #plesiosaur #Fossil

41 cervicals are preserved, but the atlas-axis and possibly 1 or 2 additional ant. cervicals, are missing. The minimum number, 43 cervicals, is shared only with Microcleidus tournemirensis. Thus, Plesionectes might have had the longest neck in all Lower Jurassic plesiosaurs. 3/5

Plesionectes is based upon an almost complete skeleton (though with smashed skull) that was found in 1978 and is in the @SMNStuttgart collection since 1979. Plesionectes has an unusual combination of characters and is characterised by its extremely long neck. 2/5 #Research

After an hour, we had assembled a slab and counterslab flipper. Once again, we were amazed. Joschua also visited us to look at the fossil before Johan came down from Sweden and picked it up. 8/9

Here, in a shopping mall, we met a group of Jedi and Dean said something like “If the car is guarded by Jedi, nothing will happen to the precious fossil!” When we arrived at our house, we unpacked and assembled the fossil on the floor of my office. 7/9

The next morning, we began the journey to our house near Cologne, a 400 km drive. Dean asked if there was any museum we could visit, and there was one in Heilbronn. 6/9

A meeting with Georg was arranged. I and my wife Katrin, who often joins me on my trips, picked Dean up from the airport in Stuttgart and we visited Georg. We were blown away by the fossil. Georg handed us the specimen in various boxes, which we placed in the trunk of my car. 5/9

..and a Nature paper with Johan on the first ichthyosaur with blubber was in review. So, for me, whose research focus is plesiosaurs, it was a logical step to reach out to them and ask for collaboration. Dean and Johan were immediately intrigued by the specimen. 4/9 #nature
