Ueda's work for Moon is rich in detail and subtlety. I mostly played the game for its characters and story but have often returned to it only so I could meander through its spaces. Every wee corner is a hymn to the homely, the quaint or the altogether extraordinary.

In this and other regards, the influence of D no Shokutaku and its character, Laura, is clear and unmistakable. Maria's director and studio head at Break, Akira Okada, was an ex-Warp employee who worked as sales director precisely at the time when Eno's game was being developed.

I always held that Capcom squandered many an inspired idea from their RE4 prototypes. To wit, this unnerving portrayal of enemies as bleary apparitions capable of weightless displacement, shown in the 2003 demo Hallucination. Playing Alan Wake 2 I often harked back to this image.

Koudelka's OST symbolizes a period of unrestrained experimentalism in videogame music composition, boasting an audacious and uncommonly expansive stylistic range. Even so, it excels when at its most conventional. 'Requiem' and 'Ubi caritas et amor' are incontestable masterworks.

In my first year at school in 87, they sold this chewing gum which included 1.5" sticker versions of popular computer game covers, namely this Street Fighter ZXS/C64 one. They made quite an impression, it goes without saying. No wonder I had such an instant attraction to Shenmue.

For years it was uncertain whether TRIPITAKA 玄奘三蔵求法の旅, by SoftEdge, had ever been published. Knowledge of the Win/Mac CD-ROM comes solely from the online CVs of producers Hiroshi Ōnishi and Mori Kōichi. This week, the game sold at a Yahoo for nearly $300 after 24 bids.

L.O.L is initialism for Lack of Love, a 2000 Dreamcast game by Love-de-Lic. But it might as well stand for Labour of Love, as Sakamoto single-handedly composed, arranged, produced, performed and mixed this soundtrack in return for but a nominal fee.

Far from an adaptation of the 1995 anime, developers of the Ghost in the Shell game considered this tertiary visual element of the film to be of sufficient importance to justify its painstaking reproduction in mission briefings, elegantly rendered in smooth, sharp, real-time 3D.

One of the most impressive moments in videogame history is hidden away at the very end of Éric Chahi's most paradoxical creation, Heart of Darkness. It is the solemn, meticulously crafted valediction by which its suggestive title finally falls into place.

Interestingly, the game was created by members of the Yokohama chapter of the Kamaitachi No Yoru fan club, an online group brought together by their appreciation of Chunsoft's sound novels, using the Kirikiri/KAG - a game development tool requiring little to no programming.

I recently discovered that there was a freeware sound novel released in 2000 called 1999ChristmasEve. The game is about the protagonist and his girlfriend taking refuge in a church on the night of Christmas Eve after their car breaks down in the snow.

The beginning of the historical relations between Portugal and Japan dates to the year 1541, when a Portuguese ship washed ashore at Jingujiura. Nearly sixty Japanese words are of Portuguese origin. But in what way has this cultural exchange extended to videogames? (mini thread)

If there's a Japanofiles post left in my tank it would be to finally cover the firefighting games from the 90s/00s by Human, Jaleco, SEGA, Irem, Spike, Konami, etc. It's a fairly large list of games but there's enough thematic commonality and cultural substance in there for sure.

My Eastern Mind Tumblr turns fifteen this month! I named it after Sato's cult masterpiece for the simplest of reasons: it accurately described the content I expected to publish while extending an instantly suggestive invitation to those who knew their Japanese game history.

I was tempted to try Hollow Cocoon once I learned of the studio's efforts to capture the atmosphere of a Japanese country home from the 1980s. In a way, it reminded me of the joys of exploring the old Hazuki residence. By nightfall, however, it was rather like the Himuro mansion.

It is lamentable that David Lynch's CD-ROM concept for 'Woodcutters From Fiery Ships' was never developed, of course. But if I were to persuade a fan of his work to play a single video game, this Danish rarity, 'Blackout', would be the proverbial next best thing.

@game_obscure I meant to share this earlier, assuming that quality images of the game edition aren't exactly abundant. I taught myself a bit of Danish to convince its original owner to part ways with it, years before the age of free online translation. Anyway, here it is.

Golly. Japan's most controversial game of the late 80s, 177 refers to the article in their penal code detailing the crime of rape. It was pulled off shelves after the Komiko party's motion to the Shūgiin (House of Representatives) for Macadamia Soft to immediately suspend sales.

While Mercurius Pretty and its artwork speak very little to me, I found it to be a cut above your average bishōjo. Certain that it would interest some of my followers, I took the liberty of scanning it and sharing it at the Internet Archive:

There's a baffling tendency to remake games of particularly impenetrable visual aesthetics. Panzer Dragoon, Final Fantasy VII, Shadow of the Colossus, Demon's Souls or Silent Hill 2 are all paradigmatic of how true visual magnificence can comfortably endure technical antiquation.
