Thanks to the reduced background noise during the lockdown period, the earthquake detection capabilities of the seismic stations are increased. For instance, in the station of PTF, we could detect low-magnitude earthquakes that happened in far away distances.

More than that, in the locations where the population density is high, the noise reduction is still quite clear (except POZS station in Naples, where most likely the people moved to their holiday houses, which increased the noise levels).

Here, you can see the noise level changes for 10Hz (human-related) to 1Hz (environment-related) . In the higher frequencies the noise level reduction is clearly visible as the human activities are limited due to the lockdown whereas in longer periods there is almost no change.

That trend can be seen between the COVID-19 lockdown period and the year 2022 in the figure above, as other temporal variations can still be seen during the lockdown period while the overall noise levels are reduced.

Here, you can see the background noise levels for 10Hz, mainly dominated by human-related activities. You can see the day-night, weekday-weekend, and national holiday variations with different colours as human activities are likely to reduce during night, weekend and holiday.

This study used almost 250 seismic stations, mostly located in Italian cities and towns, which helps us understand the overall trends around the country.

The model provides a distribution of each class with a given input, and it can be easily implemented into a real-time earthquake monitoring routine.

So, we manually detected hundreds of car passages in several stations in the network and compared them with the earthquake traces in both the time and frequency domain. We developed a CNN model that uses 10s long traces to distinguish between earthquakes and vehicles.

We first introduced amplitude thresholds and then tried to distinguish them without ML models in the frequency domain. Still, both cases resulted in either the exclusion of many network stations or falsely excluded traces.
