The article explores the experiences of pacifist volunteers who volunteered to be infested with parasites in a study of infectious disease transmission during WWII - and uses their unusual bodily labours to think about the politics of everyday life in wartime Britain.

Looking for some reading suggestions! Any recommendations for studies that deal with historical failures, disappointments, dead-ends, events/movements that don’t lead where their originators hoped - and why they might still be worth exploring?.

Finally, yesterday's webinar on the challenges involved in securing high-quality surgery and post-op care for patients experiencing homelessness provided a brilliant end to my involvement in the project - with hopefully more work on the subject to come.

I also greatly enjoyed finding writers for the Surgery & Emotion blog, including @_jasminewood's brilliant piece on the emotional impact of injury among WWII servicemen and @GiskinDay's fascinating article on gratitude in surgical encounters

We hoped that the project would challenge stereotypes about the 'ideal' surgical trainee and help to diversify future training programmes - and 78% of participants reported that their opinions about the surgical profession had been changed by taking part.

@agnesjuliet had the brilliant idea of setting up a mentoring project for medical students interested in surgical careers - and I was lucky enough to run this programme with a wonderful set of surgical mentors and aspiring trainees.
