In Cameroon 🇨🇲 we reported a +3000% increase in Proton VPN signups on October 23rd, sparked by government attempts to silence protests over contested election results. Since then, VPN usage has continued to climb, catapulting Cameroon into our Top 5 countries for free VPN usage.

In Iran, we saw the total blackout as VPN connections dropped to zero from the afternoon (UTC) of 18th June until the morning of the 21st; then some minimal connectivity until the morning of the 25th when the internet was reconnected (to its usual heavily censored state).

The Afghanistan outage:

This follows a disturbing trend in restrictive regimes, first seen in Iran in June, and then in Afghanistan in September, where governments have taken the most extreme censorship measures by completely "unplugging" the internet for the entire country.

After 5 days, Tanzania 🇹🇿 has reconnected itself to the internet. Usually when governments restrict internet and social media access to suppress dissent during protests and elections, VPN usage increases. In this case, the internet was completely disconnected. 🧵
