@DomaniGiornale
in edicola da oggi, anche un mio pezzo sull'impatto - (geo)politico, economico e sociale - del conflitto in Ucraina sull'Asia Centrale. Grazie a
@dlfabbri
per avermi coinvolto!
Looking at what is happening in Karakalpakstan, it seems clear that the population in
#CentralAsia
is increasingly willing and able to mobilise to make its voice heard (latest examples GBAO and Kazakhstan). With the only exception, at the moment, of Turkmenistan
Central Asia is the new diplomatic and geopolitical must-have: "Japan plans to invite counterparts from five Central Asian countries to participate online in the G7 foreign ministers meeting. Japanese Prime Minister plans to travel to the region in 2024"
The Jewish legacy is an important part of
#Uzbekistan
's history, not only in Bukhara but also in Tashkent. I hope it will be preserved by the authorities...
#CentralAsia
I believe that my greatest contribution to
#CentralAsia
|n studies will remain the discovery, made this morning after a month of
#quarantine
, that starting from
#Kazakhstan
and going clockwise, the stans are put in alphabetical order
#coronavirus
“I felt ashamed, frankly. People from
#Tajikistan
come to Russia for work, they work hard, but we don’t see them as our equals,” he said. “But when we went to Tajikistan we were treated with kindness" |
#CentralAsia
A very important visit. When all the limitations of the very close economic ties between
#CentralAsia
and
#Russia
are evident, Mirziyoyev is looking in a different direction, focusing (as he has ever done) on
#connectivity
"President of France Emmanuel Macron will visit Kazakhstan on November 1, and Uzbekistan on November 2. France is ready to support these two countries on the path of reform and modernization, to support their independence and sovereignty"
This is my tweet number 5,000 and the last one for 2020. The occasion seems like the right one to thank my network here on Twitter, not very large but certainly inspiring and from which I always learn a lot about a region we all love:
#CentralAsia
. Happy New Year!
Very nice article and pictures by
@voguemagazine
. Considering how socially important and often economically challenging is wedding in
#Uzbekistan
, a definitely worth reading and looking
#CentralAsia
"The trip to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan aims to boost France’s energy security, according to two people familiar with the French President’s thinking. Macron will travel with a delegation of 15 business leaders from the energy, agrifood and mining sectors"
The President of the Italian Republic will be in Uzbekistan from 9 to 11 November and will visit Tashkent, Samarkand and Khiva. He is also expected to sign an agreement on reciprocal investments between Italy and Uzbekistan
The constant reference to the "Great Game" about
#CentralAsia
is honestly boring. Besides, if they are so far behind
#China
and
#Russia
, the
#US
has only itself to blame. You can't leave a region like Central Asia and hope to find it empty once you're back
#Uzbekistan
, in 2019 visitors grew by more than 25%. Tourists from
#CentralAsia
accounted for 85% of the total. The real challenge now is to increase the flow from
#Europe
#ICYMI
. "
#BP
abandoned three oil projects in
#Kazakhstan
after it changed strategy to concentrate on renewable energy and its existing ventures". Definitely not good news for Tokayev, Nazarbayev and Co.
#CentralAsia
"Trade of Turkey with Central Asian states has grown by 30% in January-November 2022, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute. Trade turnover amounted to $11.3 billion"
Interesting data on
#Uzbekistan
's business system: "Turkey established 407 companies with Turkish capital in UZB last year, followed by Russia with 356, China with 266,
#Kazakhstan
with 209 and South Korea with 97"
This is certainly a crucial factor: "It also helps that many potential Uzbek, Tajik and Turkmen troublemakers – young, unemployed men – have been forced to leave the country to work as labor migrants in Russia and elsewhere" |
#CentralAsia
#Kazakhstan
Working on a piece on
#Covid_19
in
#CentralAsia
, I am wondering what's driving
#Turkmenistan
/
#Tajikistan
denial of cases within their borders. Main answer: control.
#Berdy
/
#Rahmon
are trying to avoid a potentially destabilizing issue. Once more, at the expense of their citizens
"A Russian consul general in Kazakhstan has been sacked following a controversial interview in which he claimed that the Central Asian country was intentionally discriminating against the Russian language in schools"
#ICYMI
. "
#Turkmenistan
's President has ordered 8 national banks in the country to fund an enterprise to improve the pedigree of the

dog breed. They are required to chip in with a 12.5% stake each"...and it's
#autumn
, it can't even be a sunstroke
"
#Baradar
said
#Tajikistan
interferes into internal affairs of
#Afghanistan
. "There is counteraction to each action". Hard to imagine
#Rahmon
going it alone - Russia is acting in the shadows - but his gamble is becoming increasingly risky |
#CentralAsia
Tourism potential of
#CentralAsia
is huge and a boost to the sector would certainly lead to an increased regional
#connectivity
: "Convenient conditions will be created on the border of
#Uzbekistan
and
#Kazakhstan
to simplify border crossing procedures"
#Uzbekistan
Airways to increase direct flights between Milan/Rome and Urgench/Tashkent.
#Tashkent
is set to become an international hub for
#CentralAsia
as a whole
Working on a piece on
#Tajikistan
, I wonder why
#Rahmon
decided not to let Rustam Emomali run in his place. Fear of instability due also to
#Covid_19
impact? Fear of a
#Kazakhstan
scenario? Fear of
#China
's potential reaction?Maybe a mix of these and other reasons
#CentralAsia
"We don’t need a DJ, a singer, a car racer, we need a President”. 7 people held a demonstration in front of the

their bravery deserves to be underlined

On

#CentralAsia
@nikmccaren
"This move is believed to be aimed at encouraging the self-reliance of the countries — Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan — and at reining in Russia and China, both of which have strong influence over the region"
No natural gas union with Russia, but: "Uzbekistan has signed an import deal with neighbouring Turkmenistan for an extra 1.5 billion cubic metres (bcm) of natural gas for the winter season"
Thanks to
@OSCE_Academy
for giving me the opportunity to analyze relations between Turkey and
#Turkmenistan
over the last 30 years. Spoiler: it's been an "authoritarian cooperation". Many thanks also to
@schwartztronica
for his essential support

News like this are more valuable than many speeches about
#Uzbekistan
economic openness. Considering also country's demographic reality, for
#Mirziyoyev
it is fundamental to obtain growth and
#unemployment
reduction
#CentralAsia
And so we have probably reached the end:
#Berdy
is about to hand over power to
#Serdar
. In Italy we say "change everything so that nothing changes". A sentence that probably could also be applied to the future of
#Turkmenistan
|
#CentralAsia
According to
@BCG
,
#CentralAsia
"holds a ten-year foreign direct investment (
#FDI
) potential of $170 billion, with up to $70 billion of that figure in the non-extractive industries". An analysis that should be read carefully in
#Kazakhstan
and
#Uzbekistan
#Uzbekistan
, the view from
@FitchRatings
:
#Mirziyoyev
's reform process is positive for the country, but much remains to be done in terms of controlling inflation, sustainable
#growth
and reducing the role of the state in the economy to attract
#FDI
I have been watching
#Turkmenistan
for 8 years now and I think that this is the lowest point. A sad brief summary: denial of
#COVID19
, refuse of
#WHO
mission, weather disasters ignored, energy price fall, food security at risk, etc
#CentralAsia
#Berdy
Very long and detailed article (even if here and there some clichés about the area appear) coming to a reasonable conclusion:
#CentralAsia
still has Russia as a privileged partner because it has (had) no alternative |
#Uzbekistan
#Kazakhstan
Who knows if next Monday Twitter will be flooded by posts on post-election chaos in
#Kyrgyzstan
. In the meantime: "22% of households reported that at least one household member lost a job or had to return from abroad due to
#COVID19
"
#CentralAsia
Looking at what is happening in
#Kazakhstan
from a regional perspective, there must be a growing fear among
#CentralAsia
leaders. Many statues, symbolic and real, are destined to fall sooner or later, looking especially at
#Tajikistan
and
#Turkmenistan
With some of my thoughts on the geopolitical 'bubble' that, beyond the region's potential, is involving Central Asia. Thanks to
@ChrisRickleton
for getting me involved!
I am working on an article on the language issue in
#Kazakhstan
and
#CentralAsia
and it is like being on a roller coaster ride, between historical legacies, political pressures (e.g. this article which uses a pan-Turkic vision) and current needs
It seems
#Mirziyoyev
started a round of calls with regional leaders, to give substance to the attempt to make
#Uzbekistan
a regional leader. What's happening in
#Kyrgyzstan
is a bogeyman for all
#CentralAsia
|n leaders. I suppose he will pretend to have lost
#Jeenbekov
's number
"India has been invited to an international connectivity summit in
#Uzbekistan
". These mega conferences are often just propaganda, but it is significant that
#Mirziyoyev
is increasingly positioning himself as the promoter of
#connectivity
in
#CentralAsia
In
#CentralAsia
many steps forward have been made. But news like this one show how fragile the situation could be when it comes to
#ethnic
relations, even if ethnic affiliation is often just a pretext to vent social tensions with violence
#Kazakhstan
By using this way instead of the Karachi port (or Gwadar), China will increase regional connectivity, while at the same time undermine Pakistan's role in the field. Beijing gives with one hand and takes away with the other |
#CentralAsia
Not exactly a wise move by
#Mirziyoyev
. Sometimes silence is the best option, especially when you are pursuing a "modernizing authoritarianism" project in your country.
#Lukashenko
represents only the second part of the definition

My article on the repercussions on Central Asia and on the relations between regional Republics and Moscow of Russia's invasion of Ukraine out today on

for the insights!
Putin, Erdogan and Raisi (and I add Mattarella, president of the Italian republic) are in Central Asia. Last week it was Macron's turn. The region certainly has great potential, but I think there is also a potential geopolitical "bubble" in the making
Great piece by
@IWPR
on the
#media
landscape in
#Turkmenistan
: "All of the country’s 27 newspapers, except one, are official state entities. A committe controls their activity. State employees must subscribe to particular newspapers/magazines"
#CentralAsia
Such statements are the standard. The problem is that by now every time Putin talks about integration with Central Asia or the Caucasus, his words sound like more or less explicit threats
For
#Tajikistan
, the worst-case scenario materialised. The Tajik authorities have always strongly opposed the Taliban. A further militarisation of the border is likely and
#Rahmon
will try to get funds from everyone. Possible flow of refugees as well

I am very proud that my article "

@CentralAsiaProg
#CentralAsia
Well done,
#Berdy
. So as not to admit the risk
#Turkmenistan
is facing (why close
#Ashgabat
otherwise) Arkadag has impoverished his country's already disastrous health system. It's a good gesture towards
#Iran
, but made at the expense of Turkmens
#Covid_19
#Berdy
ordered to develop
#oil
production and to attract

Glad to have been included in the

#Uzbekistan
set to become a
#windpower
giant, not only in
#CentralAsia
but globally: "Saudi Arabia’s ACWA power will invest $1.1bn building a wind farm as large as 1GW, propelling fossil-reliant Uzbekistan from nowhere into the wind power big league"
Bad news for
#Berdy
, as
#China
increases
#LNG
imports and reduces that from
#Turkmenistan
: "China's pipeline gas imports from TKM fell 1.5% m/m in Nov, in Jan-Nov, imports down 14.9%. Gas imports from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan increased in Nov"
#CentralAsia
Today marks the 14th anniversary of the death of
#Niyazov
aka Turkmenbashi and the surprising rise to power of
#Berdymukhammedov
aka Arkadag. 14 years that for
#Turkmenistan
have "simply" meant a further descent into isolationism, closure and misery
#CentralAsia
An extract of a
#Mirziyoyev
's interview with
@NAR
: "
#Uzbekistan
's most urgent and important policy goal is to be admitted to the
#WTO
/ The
#Uzbek
president described the election as "the first step for Uzbekistan to join the ranks of advanced democracies"
"The Summit of the Central Asian leaders and the German Chancellor will be held on September 29 in Berlin. The meeting in such format will be held for the first time. The Chancellor will receive the President of Kazakhstan a day earlier"
Interesting article. Only the headline is quite misleading: so far
#CentralAsia
|n regimes have been extraordinarily capable of maintain stability, at the expense of their citizens. I do agree that
#Uzbekistan
represents a big hope, but for openness
Final failure of the
#Turkmenistan
-sponsored
#TAPI
project. The Taliban have reassured on the safety of a possible pipeline, but their lack of reliability (especially in the eyes of India) will make it impossible to develop the project
"A Russian passport can greatly help to ease the process of migration, though many Tajiks hold ambivalent feelings towards Russia. They enjoy freedom/facilities that are absent in rural
#Tajikistan
but they often experience racism/xenophobia"
#CentralAsia
Tokayev: "I would like to express our appreciation to the continuous and firm support of the US for our independence, territorial integrity, and sovereignty". Since the conflict in Ukraine began, these are the key words to use when arriving in Kazakhstan
Interesting to see if (in the medium term) Serdar has the will, and if so the ability, to at least try to change the situation in
#Turkmenistan
. There are precedents in other contexts (Mirziyoyev in
#Uzbekistan
), but the Turkmen situation is very different
