I don’t write much these days, but getting along to the Hill Dickinson for the first time was the perfect excuse to take a trip down memory lane for the @LivEchonews. When I covered the saga of the club’s search for a new home - this was distant dream

David Bartlett reported on Everton's off-field activities during his time with the ECHO - and he was wowed by his first ever visit to the Hill Dickinson Stadium

It’s such a rollercoaster ride being an Everton fan, but I’m allowing myself to feel optimistic about this

Today is the 35th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. I've looked at how the ECHO has reported on the tragedy and the families' long fight for justice. Thanks to @joe_thomas18, @PaddyShennan, @EleanorBarlow & @davidbartlett1 for their contributions https://t.co/MNu1cSJqZz

A precedent has been set, that will have long reaching ramifications. Where we go from here as fans is to be totally behind the players and the manager. COYB.

The irresponsible way the club has been run has come back to haunt us. That said very little credit is given to Everton for trying to be more fiscally responsible the last couple of years. PL view seems to be too little too late and they threw the book at the club.

The Premier League reserve the right to penalise a club once those loses are over £15m. So being anything over £105m doesn’t exactly scream that you’re being run responsibly. However, one big player sale could be the difference between a 10 point deduction and getting off.

You are allowed to ‘overspend’ or lose £105m in a three season period without necessarily incurring a penalty, although again this area is somewhat opaque.

The Commission say no other club has ever tried to rebuild a squad to compete at the top and build a new stadium at the same time.

This resulted in lower revenues. And instead of taking pause the club doubled down on that strategy. Combined with some bad luck and the Covid closures, and trying to fund a hugely expensive stadium at the same time the wheels came off.

Because this is the Premier League and football finance we’re talking about there is a level of opaqueness to the rules. Everton bet the house of making it big. They overspent in the hoping of getting into Europe, we know this part well and have seen that failure on the pitch.

I’ve read the Premier League Commission on the Everton 10-point deduction. As an Evertonian it’s not exactly a fun read, but here’s my take 🧵
