One thing that does concern me about the impact of
#Covid
on education is school trips. For many children school trips can provide life-changing/ shaping opportunities to visit museums, theatres, art galleries, heritage sites, outdoor education centres etc. It’s a huge loss.
@darynsimon
Your time
@might
be better spent look at what wasn’t completely trashed by Covid mate, it’s pretty disastrous across the board
Tho as discussed, some good may come.... if we let it
@ST3AMCo
The point I was trying to make, though maybe not very convincingly, is that it’s not just the time in the classroom that is being lost. These experiential opportunities can change lives.
@darynsimon
Visits are important but at the moment everyone needs to focus on the pandemic, vaccine, home learning and returning to school. That should be the number one priority
@darynsimon
We’ve spent a lot of time convincing parents about the value of residentials & just today I was thinking about the children who’ve missed this experience.I’m sure they will get them in their next school, but I’m concerned that they’ve missed them (and the creation of memories)
@darynsimon
I just hope schs go bonkers in the summer term for them! I’m currently planning (in my head) a camp out stargazing night for families of the school on sch grounds 😀
@darynsimon
Our school did a lot of virtual school trips last year in addition to actual school trips which was really good. Doesn't replace the experience but definitely gives something different
@darynsimon
Absolutely agree. Most of my kids have not even ventured outside of their own postcode
Going to a London museum or the theatre is completely life-changing for them
@darynsimon
It breaks my heart that it'll be 2 years running my year 6 children will miss out on a summer residential. For many it's a right of passage.
No zip wire, aeroball, midnight feasts that they think I don't know about or getting to see me demonstrate my dodgy dancing at the disco.
@darynsimon
Also to bounce off that however are some children are super lucky that they are part of a youth group like Cubs/Scouts so for them (at some point soon🤞🏻) they will be able to stay away from home and have amazing experiences with day trips and activities that schools cannot offer.
@darynsimon
No replacement for real thing but virtual tours of museums can be breathtaking; fabulous concerts, theatre, ballet. Artists, musicians have just kept on giving through this pandemic - they cannot stop giving

My sons were going to go to Madrid last year - a genuinely landmark experience that they've missed. It's a small loss in the scheme of things but one I am sorry for.
@darynsimon
This is my phd research - students visiting
@The_Globe
.
I’ve called it “a social and cultural critical event”.
So many are missing opportunities they don’t even know exist.
