‘So children going back to school would probably still have to follow the stay-at-home advice outside of school, and also the 2m close-contact rule while in school.’ Imagine trying to do that with a thousand pupils.

@darynsimon The Prof also suggested “banning or limiting playtimes”. A great suggestion that demonstrates absolutely no understanding of children or schools. The idea that children would be better off at school but socially distanced and with no playtime is laughable.

@darynsimon Imagine trying to do that with children that have learning disabilities.

@darynsimon Clearly "some scientists" have never been in a school.

@darynsimon You make a very good point. I think I could fit maybe 8 pupils in my classroom. 😳 No idea how corridors would work either.

@darynsimon Even if the children are not at risk, for some of us it’s having enough adults in school to teach effectively. I know of a DHT whose husband is in ITU. She brought the virus home from school.

@darynsimon I corridors narrower than 2 metres. Lesson changeover would be fun. Never mind break time

@darynsimon I read that this morning. Our school is already cramped for space and we would then reduce 30 to 6 in a class. At least it's summer so could get a PA outsode and teach the rest on the astro :)

@darynsimon "The University College London team says keeping pupils off has little impact, even with other lockdown measures." Let's take a look at their website shall we?

@darynsimon I read this and thought about my 32 strong tutor group who I just about squeeze into my classroom. How could the maintain 2m distance? And then changeover? Would teachers move around instead? How would that work for eg science? No thought given to teachers either...

@darynsimon Be interesting to see how this research was funded. Pitching economic v social costs. How many deaths are acceptable against which economic loss.

@darynsimon It cannot be cannot have full class, in a room, all 2 m apart.“Closing schools has minimal impact” lacks any simple logic. We can never,NEVER,know how many ppl in a school - I know plenty of over 2,000 ppl - carry+ r spreading virus. Then they all go home...

@darynsimon @digitalmaverick Yes, I skim-read the lancet piece just now. It does feel unrealistic. And the likelihood of significant increase of people not sticking so much to social distancing rules on the way to/from schools seems high.

@darynsimon @sammac_22 This is so ridiculous! Clearly this person has never been in a school! Beyond the mention of preventing 2%-4% of deaths (sure this is worth doing?!) AND chn being 2m apart, there is the vaguest mention of the increased dangers to the ADULTS in schools?! Do we not matter AT ALL?!

@darynsimon With three staff in our department office there isn’t 2m between us, never mind the classrooms. There’d be nowhere for the cafe queue to go with 2m between each student and nowhere for them to sit and eat. Ludicrous
