This is the perfect time for me to share what I've been working on. It's a tool/app/thing for people to connect over video in meaningful ways. I hope it can help you feel a little closer to your loved ones during the holidays, too!
I completely agree with this review of the Quest Pro. I received mine on launch day, was actually cautiously excited about it, and was ultimately disappointed. It’s a definite step forward, but not enough.
You know what’s not cool? Opening up a brand new video game on Xmas morning, popping it into the PS4, and being told you need to download an 11GB update that will take 11 hours.
I still like news radio because it’s perhaps the only media that doesn’t feel like it’s adding itself to my todo list. I don’t feel the need to catch every single word.
I have some exciting news! I've joined
@nocapshows
as CTO. When I met the team we realized how much we have in common, and it just made sense. We have an amazing vision for the future of live music, and now it's time to build it.
Bad Religion was one of my first punk rock loves, and today they’re kicking off a 4 show series on
@nocapshows
, each one focusing on a decade of their music. Today at 2pm pacific is the 80s!
Our small and mighty tech team at
@nocapshows
is recruiting a group of people to help us test upcoming features. You’ll be rewarded with personal satisfaction and free access to some streaming shows. No experience needed. Must love music. Hit me up.
When Trump was first elected I actually felt some pity for him. I knew he didn’t want or expect to win, and the pressure of it would probably destroy him. It feels like all of that is playing out, but I don’t feel pity now.
I've been working with and managing UNIX/Linux computers for most of my life, but I'm still excited about my first Raspberry Pi. It's just so darn cute.
I'm starting to avoid Medium content altogether now that I bump into their paywall so much. The content itself is just not actually good enough to justify paying for most of the time.
Mark Zuckerberg is terrified of even the rumors around Apple’s headset. Quest Pro was rushed to market in an attempt to beat them. A Quest 3 with only the color pass through and the improved optics would have been a winner… and that’s what we’ll get next year.
And it’s the software that’s the issue… the hardware is capable of doing things far beyond what’s actually possible with the apps and OS available today. The review covers that well.
Have you seen the brand names for the Covid vaccines? Pfizer’s is Comirnaty and Moderna’s is Spikevax. I think the drug namers are used to have like 5 years to come up with a name, and this was the best they could do with only a year.
Finally got to Skyrim VR: 1. Wow, I’m IN Skyrim! 2. Hmm, a little ill. 3. Wow, look at the dragon!! 4. Ugh, super sick. Barely made it through the intro. I’m committed to trying again still.
My 11yo daughter couldn’t sleep and started a conversation with me about what death is like. She said we can’t ever know, of course, but she thinks it’s might be like sleeping forever without dreams. Unexpected post bedtime metaphysics! 🤯
As I dive into Web3 I'm struck by the fact that it's more of an ideological and conceptual shift than a technological one (currently anyway)... and I think that's why a lot of tech people don't really get it.
I have no freaking idea what’s going to happen tomorrow. A tornado of maneating sharks may actually be plausible, and dare I say, a nice change of pace?
Starting on a list of movies the kids need to see in their lives. The Matrix, Full Metal Jacket both make the list for me. Karate Kid and Back to Future are out. What else should be in?
IBM’s acquisition of Red Hat is a big deal. I think it’s probably going to be turn out as a smart business move, but I wonder about what this could mean for open source itself longer term.
‘Cyberspace’ sounded cool when it was in the bad ass book Neuromancer, but it did not sound cool when people on the news were saying it all the time. ‘Metaverse’ sounded cool in Snow Crash, but dammit.
