Need to revise the heads, sowing width is actually 33cm. 818heads, and probably a few more smaller ones in the, ie 7-8 long . Grain size unknown but calc is default at 3.5g per 100.grains. To do your own calculations on wheat & barley https://t.co/wxq98AZYC7

Oct SMM report https://t.co/Aqa53uiyJY more sites have dropped <25% (red) don’t assume those crops are buggered. The big crops have smashed the moisture reserves as the water demands have far exceeded rain in Spring Raywood barley site today but grain size will bring it back

Hay Vs Grain calcs on some central Vic wheat with plenty of tillers & flowering with no rain in the past 3wks. https://t.co/fBxnwo7u79 over 400 tillers but the head appears compromised & yield estimates appear high but N applied for 4.5t/ha. Got some props for Elmore FDays now

Crop yield calcs on the SMM dashboard https://t.co/wxq98AZYC7 monitor soil moisture & potential yield. This wheat in Central Vic has too many tillers to successfully fill but was primed for October rain. Still dropping tillers but picking up moisture from 2023 to keep it going

Soil moisture cropping sites are quickly using up moisture his dry Sept. Big canola crop at Lk Bolac is already <25%, Giffard canola is not far behind. The other images here are wheat at Ouyen & with little supporting rain, it is now using water at a meter https://t.co/evfTycFRwR

Ag Vic smm monitoring site at Normanville & has a solid crop of barley after a great start to the season with Anzac Day break. Still a good moisture profile but starting to be depleted. Heads look 26grains if all successfully flower. https://t.co/cPAieuv3Ow

South West Victoria Soil moisture monitoring site at Yella Y Poora. Barley growing well but with some late development. Generally fill this soil up in traditional winter, but not at this point after a dry August. https://t.co/ogTxhUSEXk

Lake Bolac might be the first SMM site to drop below 25% prior to spring but has one of the better crops we are monitoring. Rainfall is not meeting the high plant water requirements. The window for banking moisture is closing https://t.co/k8va4nwYKa

The SMM site at Brim has improved deep moisture conditions by almost 43% in June/July. Starting to build a deficit in the top horizon with a dry August. Not the thickest barley crop with a lower water demand compared to a high biomass crops. https://t.co/pEroNxQELF

Ag Vic SMM Site - Charlton, patchy barley after tough start during May. Moisture to 80cm (combo from Nov 24 rain and wet July) drying out in top horizon & heavier crops using more moisture than this one but deep moisture reserves still good. https://t.co/KW7izLEXIS

Central Vic SMM site at Raywood, barley growing well, moisture to 50cm, roots down to that depth. Developing crop canopy is using water when rain not meeting crop requirements. Hopefully weekend rain banks a bit more. https://t.co/ltoeiQnfU8

Soil sampling to validate mallee sites of the Ag Vic probe network. 2inches mid Oct, >3inches at harvest time, majority of that not used & still in the profile for 2025 crop. Hand coring still an option when this wet.

repairs to SMP in NE Vic today at Youanmite, while no access to probe data, a soil core and soil moisture model will have to do. Model looks about right for moisture, but not that wet in the top horizon. Estimate is 60-70% of the moisture profile available. More rain required

Soil cores to validate the Ag Vic, Sheep Hills site east of Warracknabeal and assess deep moisture. Unfortunately just dry in the top and very bottom but great moisture otherwise & Speedo is 80% https://t.co/evfTycFRwR

2/2 It’s the depth at 30-50cm that have moisture values above field capacity, generally these are repeatable but this season holding more & made digging easy to id the cable connection fault. Knocking in the cores still good when moisture like this

Cropping sites Nth of the divide have the deep moisture & West Gippsland tracking ok, progress getting the Nth East site back on line after id the break, when it does, expect it to be 100%. So much moisture from 30-50cm. Canola up on light soil types but patchy on heavy ground.

Old school soil sampling with youngest apprentice today in central Victoria. Deep N, soil moisture. Good data, great moisture after early summer rain in 2 mths that we can avg in growing season but no rain for past 2mths. Wouldn’t take it on if not confident moisture to 1m👌
