That’s how Site-to-Site VPN works. Simple, powerful, and secure. Not a private tunnel, but a protected bridge. No need for moats or drawbridges—just armored messengers with unbreakable boxes. Digital diplomacy at its finest.

And so, the two castles—yours inside AWS and theirs outside—exchange information smoothly. The messages may travel on public roads. But they're locked, tracked, and protected from prying eyes. The couriers may pass through chaos—but the secrets inside remain untouched.

Security inside the AWS city is tight. If the messengers need to speak directly to your EC2 buildings, those buildings’ guards must recognize them. So, you teach them a universal signal: ICMP protocol—a language these messengers use to knock on doors.

AWS updates its internal maps (route tables) to direct outbound messages to the new castle gate. Now, couriers know exactly which gate to exit to reach the external kingdom—and how to get back inside without confusion.

If the external company uses its real address (public IP), messages come straight from their doorstep. But if they prefer to stay hidden, they operate behind a NAT—using an outpost with its own public IP to deliver and receive. Either way, the messengers know where to go.

On the AWS side, a Virtual Private Gateway (VGW) stands guard—like a secure gate specially opened for these messengers. On the company’s side, they set up a Customer Gateway (CGW)—either from their real building, or a front-facing outpost that handles all traffic.

That’s the essence of Site-to-Site VPN: Traffic moves over the public internet, but the data is locked in encrypted containers. You gain privacy without the expense or complexity of a dedicated private tunnel.

As part of the pact, special messengers are appointed. They travel across the public roads between the external castle and AWS. But these aren’t ordinary couriers—they carry ultra-secure boxes that no one can open, not even if intercepted or attacked.

Imagine a powerful castle outside the AWS kingdom—an external company with its own secure building. They want to exchange messages with your AWS city. But they aren’t inside the kingdom’s gates. So, they strike a trusted deal with AWS...
