Just this endless stream of algorithmically approved vitriol aimed at The Fascists I Should Hate, no nuance, big friendly images, just a bunch of loud noisy pandering intended to appease my liberal sensibilities, and I thought "god, this well and truly sucks", and I turned it off

Then I started a BlueSky account, and it was just... just Twitter again. It had more extreme nacho flavor than a peasant in the 1400s would get in his whole lifetime.

It's the whole grains and vegetables of social networking: just the stuff you're supposed to eat, none of the sugar. It feels boring because data scientists aren't trying to use it to hack your brain's pleasure centers.

I curated. I found creators who I liked to follow. I culled people who posted stuff I didn't like. The only people who's content I see are the people who I'm following. And I started to like it a lot.

then someone else posted something very dumb and I thought "huh, there's no way on this platform to performatively dunk on this person... how frustrating" - but then the intentional, designed omission of that feature started to make sense to me.

After leaving Twitter it felt old-fashioned and clunky. And then, you know, someone posted something strange and unsettling and I looked at it for a while, and thought "isn't it nice that I can do this without an algorithm deciding to feed me a lot more of this exact content"

One of the things I found magical about mastodon and the fediverse was how shitty and rudimentary it was. It didn't make me mad. Nothing was outrageous. My posts didn't get a lot of engagement. It was mostly boring people sharing pictures of their dinner.

This must be because you are weak, because you're too dumb and slow and incompetent to finish lots of spare-time houses, like you imagine other people are doing constantly. That is the only possible explanation.
