On this date & the following day in 1846–Virginia held a referendum on the retrocession of their former territory—out of then-square DC, seceding back to Virginia. Arlington wisely voted no. Alexandria (sadly then home to an intense trade in enslaved people at its port) voted yes

On this date in 2017, our Freedom Plaza neighbor, Boss Shepherd’s Restaurant, closed. It was the best meeting room we ever had, and it’s missed by all of us here. They had the bravery to show Council proceedings on the TVs over their bar. Perhaps that was their downfall.

On this date in 1978, the House approved the DC Voting Rights Amendment by a 289-127 vote. (The Senate followed suit 5 months later) . This sent the Amendment to state legislatures, who allowed the 7-year deadline to expire w/o getting the necessary 3/4 of them to approve
