Do you really expect that students be willing to divulge the nature of their trauma to what are effectively strangers? . That a student broke down in my office today because I was the only professor that didn't make them divulge is atrocious.

To my fellow faculty: if a student is taking the time to meet privately with you to discuss how to better their grade after a traumatic event stymied their coursework, don't fucking make them tell you what happened. Just believe them & move on.
