Addendum: For your earliest "just figuring things out" stage of being an artist/director/game dev/etc it's perfectly acceptable to make derivative works, it's akin to how artists usually trace or heavily rely on reference art/pictures for their first pieces. But you have to grow!.

Cannot be overstated how important it is that you find inspiration from outside of the medium of whatever you're creating. "My game is inspired by the games x, y, and z!" OK, so I should play those instead?.
