I dropped out of the Cubs because it clashed with The Incredible Hulk on the telly. I work for The Irish Times. DMs were open until the X man made me close them
This letter in today’s Irish Times is one of the saddest things I’ve ever read in the pages of the newspaper. Life can be unspeakably cruel. The letter also makes me feel infinitely privileged for all that I have.
There aren’t many news stories that will stop almost every Irish person in their tracks. This very sad news is one of them. RIP to one of the finest singers of this - or any - generation.
Tesco to give staff a backdated 10% bonus on their hourly rate, “in recognition of their incredible effort” during the coronavirus outbreak. What we - as citizens - can do is give them (and all frontline retail staff) all the respect and the kindness we can muster.
Right now there are three houses within 50m of my front door in breach of the current Covid restrictions. We can go to level 1000 but it won’t make a bit of difference unless people cop the f**k on.
Dear UK, Please take a breath. The EU really isn’t that bad. It’s quite good actually - what with all the peace and prosperity and rights and stuff. You should stay with us. We’d be delighted to have you back even at this late stage. All the best, Everyone Else in Europe.

And on Wednesday we will be debating whether or not we actually need to put babies in car seats. If you think they're grand rolling around on the back seat, get in touch, we'd love to hear from you.
Bono's doing a lot to ease the PPE shortage here and paying millions to do it. Here are 2 tweets in response. "Does this ars€hole ever stop?" and "I hope they turn down the offer if not he will be wrighting songs about it for the rest of his life". People are just ridiculous.
If everyone in Dublin who reads this could, in the days ahead, find and order from a restaurant that normally doesn’t do takeaway but is doing so now it might make things just a little bit better for a whole lot of people. That is what I am going to do. Who’s with me?
So Irish soccer - which is played by tens of thousands, young and old, gets around €3m a year from the Irish taxpayer while greyhound racing gets €16.5m. Can someone explain that to me, please?
Those seeking to give the Lidl Looters a pass on the basis that the people in suits who wrecked our country didn’t go to jail are ridiculous. Bottom line is 30 local jobs are at risk and access to cheap groceries is gone for an entire community. Shameful. No other word for it.
I don’t know from where this man could have found the strength to deliver this eulogy for his lost children. I can’t think of a more powerful way to share the message that, ultimately, love is the most important thing we have.
The next few weeks are going to be hard for us all but do you know what? If we can collectively save more than 3,000 lives between now and the end of May by just staying at home for a little bit longer, it’s probably worth it, don’t you think?
All credit to Circle K which has just announced it is to offer free hot drinks to all front line HSE staff and all emergency services in the coming week across its network of service stations.
There are thousands of people in pubs across Ireland tonight. Those people are not thinking about social distancing. It’s an insanity. France and Spain are closing all their bars, cafes and restaurants as of right now. We have to

It’s funny how fast the Government can make mask wearing a requirement in schools but ask it to make generic uniforms or mandatory book rental schemes a requirement and suddenly its hands are tied by boards of management and decades pass with nothing happening.
Got my Covid booster cert mailed to me today and had it uploaded to the app in less than 10 seconds. The authorities get a hard time from people like me and sometimes get a hard time from actual me but they have done a phenomenal job with the vaccines and certification process.
I would like to be able to change this headline on this piece to 200 by the end of the month but I need your help. And please support your local businesses in the weeks ahead. Every fiver you spend close to home matters now more than ever.

Does anyone else think this Covid bonus idea is weird? When it’s over let’s mark the end of the emergency with a public holiday and remember those we have lost. Let’s take the billion and use it to care for vulnerable people. Surely that’d be a bonus everyone could enjoy?
Was just in the Disney store. Very polite man at the door stopped a woman and her teenage daughter and explained face masks were mandatory. He offered to give the two of them masks - give not sell - but they turned on their heels and walked away in huff. Isn’t that just mad?
Dunno about you but short of digging a bunker under my house, lining its walls with bottled water and canned meat and hiding there for the next six months, I am not sure what more I could be doing.
Deputy CMO Dr Ronan Glynn says they are asking everyone to do just a little bit more than what they are doing. "If every individual can do just that little bit more over the next few weeks we will stop another wave," he says |
Yesterday we buried a lovely woman. Due to

there was no wake & our community couldn’t enter the church.
But the entire parish came out & lined the 2km road to graveyard to say goodbye to Betty Ryan.

The banks meet

today and will promise to help people impacted by covid-19. It's needed. But if you or anyone close to you finds a bank being difficult as this progresses, contact me and I'll do what I can to help and to hold them to their promise. That is my promise.
I’d be okay with serious restrictions on public events, gatherings and movement now it it meant we could lessen the impact of

-19 in the days, weeks and months ahead. You?
Covid has given me very little to smile about but the idea that the HSE would ask a qualified surgeon and pilot applying to be a vaccinator for her Junior Cert results actually made me laugh out loud. I mean have you any idea what yours were? I don’t.
15 hours in the water and found alive clinging to a lobster pot! So, so relieved for these young women and their families and friends. Stories like this almost never have a happy ending.
I had this really weird dream last night in which the US president stood on a podium in front of all these cameras and told his nation that maybe it was time to assess the merits of injecting very sick people with disinfectant before bombarding them with high intensity UV light.
This story is important. Every detail in it matters. It should be read and shared as widely as possible. This family needs and deserves the support of all decent people.
I went to both Lidl and Tesco today to do my weekly shop..... staff in both were excellent at managing shoppers who were themselves excellent at managing distances. And the shelves were full. I was reassured by that. I hope you will be too.
I like to think I am pretty careful - but not miserably so - with my praise for politicians but
@SimonHarrisTD
absolutely nailed it with this comment today.
Is it just me or does anyone else think it odd that in the latest raft of restrictions and controls announced to curb the spread of Covid-19 there doesn’t seem to be much attention paid to protecting meat factory workers or people living in Direct Provision?
More than 90 grand raised to buy Caio Benicio a pint in less than 12 hours, a sign if ever one was needed that there are far more good people in our world than bad ones.
Two photographs, separated by just over a year, taken in Stockholm and in Dublin. Who says one person can’t make a difference?

If anyone reading this has shared or is considering sharing footage from the terrible events in Offaly this morning can you just stop for a second and ask yourself how you’d feel if it was footage of your friends or family that was circulating.
Ireland is Britain’s oldest foe, great rival and best friend. I can’t speak for everyone here but I suspect I speak for many when I say how terrible it is to see it tear itself to shreds while sowing the seeds of a grim future. History won’t be kind to its hapless leaders

If English fans boo so much as a second of the Italian national anthem tonight, then I think the rest of the world should, as one, immediately focus all its energy on willing Italy to win. Who’s with me?

F**k. Just got a call from an 083 number. It was a recorded message from the Dept of Social Protection. My drug trafficking has been exposed and I'm facing immediate arrest. Grateful for the heads up lads. Fleeing to Mexico now. I may be gone a while.

The singular defence used by all those who went to that golf dinner appears to be “I thought it would be grand”. Every one of them should have realised as soon as they walked into the room that it was a long way from grand. Anyone who took their seat after that is culpable.
Some examples of very bad value for money in Irish restaurants and pubs have been put to me. Latte's for €4.25, glasses of wine in pubs for €9.50. Restaurants charging €33 for wine that sells for €7 in shops. Are these isolated examples or have you come across any yourself?
Have you had any deliveries left unsecured on your doorstep either because you weren’t home or because the delivery people didn’t bother knocking on your door or calling you to say it was there? Am just wondering if it is a common occurrence.
I think the reason the
#latelatetoyshow
is getting bigger and bigger is that it allows us to set aside our weary - and wearying - social media infused cynicism for a few hours in a way that is utterly unique to Ireland. And what’s not to love about that?
In a supermarket today I overheard a maskless person on the phone trying to convince an older relative not to take the vaccine because Covid is harmless and the shot is deadly. Any counter argument put up was loudly rubbished. It was rage inducing and depressing in equal measure
Hey Ireland, you know the way - for the craic - we all come together to make mad things happen on the world stage like that time Ronnie O’Brien was the Time person of the century? Do you think we could all come together and be the best at dealing with coronavirus? For the craic?
Solidarity. Honesty. Empathy. That’s what we need more than anything else right now. The speech from our

had all three. What he said didn’t make me feel better about what’s coming. But it didn’t make me feel worse. We will face it together and we will win.
The very fact that some news organisations deleted previously published stories about Caroline Flack once news of her death broke should be a sign they should never have been published in the first place. The sign will be ignored though and they will soon identify new victims.
This is just so sad..... it is easy to take all the privilege we have for granted but in the grand scheme of things it is just blind luck that it was this young woman and those other people suffocating in that freezer and not you or me.
Text from Vietnamese woman Pham Thi Tra My (26) to her mum, apparently from inside trailer found in Essex as she was dying.
"I'm sorry Mom. My path to abroad doesn't succeed. Mom, I love you so much! I'm dying bcoz I can't breathe.. I am sorry, Mom".
It really really bugs me that almost every single apple sold in this country comes with a stupid sticker on it. It’s an apple. It came from a pack of apples. I don’t need a sticker to tell me it’s an apple.
The

had so many feelgood moments but one of my favouites was our collective response to the Fanta f**k. As one we all shrugged and thought "There for the grace of God..." In some other countries, I suspect, the outrage levels would have been off the charts.
What we need to see today are thousands of Leaving Cert students taking to Twitter to wish would-be TDs well while reminding them that - do you know what - it doesn't matter how they do, they'll all be grand in the end.
Am starting to think that if Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran co-wrote a song which Beyoncé sang for Ireland in the Eurovision we’d still not make it in to Grand (not grand at all actually) Final of

I’ll be sad to leave Twitter but will do so without hesitation if it becomes the toxic hellscape many of us fear is inevitable. But there will be other platforms and it will be hilarious if Elon Musk, the “genius”, ends up spending billions of dollars on a latter-day MySpace.
I think
@Glenisk
is one of the best brands in Ireland. It has supported organic farmers for a very long time, the products it makes are excellent and it has led the way on more sustainable packaging. It will come back from this.
Good luck to all Ireland’s shops, restaurants, hair salons, gyms, hotels and all the rest as they reopen and do what they do best fromTuesday. Fingers crossed December is good to you all.

If the daily number of Covid-19 cases we are seeing today is similar to the number we were seeing in early May when the country was in a state of fear and lockdown, it’s probably a mistake for so many people to be behaving like everything is just grand now, right?
He lost in the ballot boxes. He lost in the State courts. He lost in the Supreme Court and he lost in the court of public opinion. He has just lost again in the electoral college. Has any one person ever lost the same election as many times as

Hey Twitter, stand down your indignation. I also have reusable, washable face masks. My point was there is absolutely no excuse for anyone to ever go into a supermarket or shop or get on a bus, plane or train without covering their face.

Hello. I need your help. I'm looking for excellent Irish-based websites when I might find food, art, gifts, books, odd but lovely things, stuff I need, stuff I definitely don't need but kind of want - you know yourself. The only restriction is they have to be local.

My 3-year-old dishwasher broke so I called a repair guy who took one look and declared it unfixable because (something to do with electronics). So I’ve to buy a new one. Apart from the cost to me - which is a pain - the environmental impact of our disposable culture is mental
I don’t often praise supermarkets but all credit to
@lidl_ireland
for selling face masks at cost. 35 quid for 50..... now, if only more people wore the damned things.
#wearamask
Not long ago I would have thought a list of 50 was a stretch. Now it is 400 and there is more to come. Thanks to everyone who has helped me compile this. I hope it helps you if you’re a shopper or a shop in the days ahead.
And in the blink of an eye - almost - our list of 100 becomes a list of 200. Thanks for all your help. There will be more to come.

My mother-in-law got her first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine today. Delighted for her. And a bit jealous. Please don’t believe the misinformation and the lies you have heard and are going to hear in the days ahead. These vaccines save lives.
It amuses me greatly how so many of the angriest, shoutiest and elf-styled defenders of "personal freedom" and "independent thought" on this platform hide behind a cloak of anonymity.
If you haven’t already, can you download the HSE Covid Tracker? Unless you’re an anti-vax, anti-masker in which case you’ll view it as another piece of the new world order jigsaw puzzle and me a shill for Soros. (I’ve saved you the bother of tagging me now. You’re welcome)
For as long as I can remember, repeal has been talked of as “the most divisive” issue in ireland. When the exit polls are borne out later today it will stand as one of the most unifying.
Dear Ireland. I am very sorry. "Finally starting to feel like summer," I said at lunchtime. I put on a pair of shorts. And sandals. Then the rain came.
The North could be one of the world’s most economically advantaged places aligned with both the EU and UK post Brexit but the DUP will say no because it cant abide differences between NI and “the mainland” except for marriage equality/women’s rights. Where’s the sense in that?
Despite all the lies circulating on social media, it is now clear the property burned out in Ringsend last month was set to house up to 14!families… yep, families.
In a clear sign of how bad things have got (at least in my head), I heard Ireland's Call on the radio this morning and actually found myself welling up. Am only scarlet!
I’d heard so much talk about the
@SuperValuIRL
ad that I approached it with weary cynicism. Just watched it. It’s brilliant, full of heart and hope and an almost perfect capture of where we are now. Hats off to all of them. And no, no I’m not, there’s just something in my eye.
Boris Johnson and the Tories have a 19 point lead in some polls and no Republican thinks Trump has done anything wrong? Can someone please tell me what’s going on? How can so many people be in denial about so much?
There will never be as towering a figure in Irish broadcasting as Gay Byrne was in his prime. The word legend is over-used but he was the real deal. RIP.
