57- Joseph O’Connor- Star of the Sea A masterpiece. For a while thought it was flabby but haven’t read a more perfect novel in 20 years.

55- Ann Cleeves- Wild Fire Final book in the Shetland series is probably the weakest. Didn’t really come together at all. Characters have run out of a bit of road.

54- Keith Cameron- 168 Songs of Hatred & Failure Comprehensive near song by song account of the Manics. For a slightly casual fan this was a pretty daunting monolith. Curio for big fans only really. But impressive in its scope.

53- Dennis Lehane- Shutter Island Brilliant mystery. Saw the film years ago & enjoyed trying to match up my half remembered tale to this masterful psychological thriller.

51- Kate Atkinson- Started Early, Took My Dog. Kate is such a brilliant writer- lifts a simple enough detective series to a different level. Funny, great characters & so many intertwining plots.

I am here for an ill fated Stevie G caretaker reign. The car crash potential seems all upside.

I wrote a few words about Mani for The Sunday Times - I didn’t know it would be behind a paywall, so here it is if you would like to read it: 1/7

50- Abir Mukherjee- Hunted. Billed as a thriller but instead just a turgid borefest set around a terrorist threat during a US election. Something about kids & parents but overall a mess. Avoid.

49- J.R.R. Tolkien - The Hobbit A childhood favourite, shared with the kids. Such a brilliant tale, and hopefully opening their mind to some great books.

48- Ann Cleeves-Cold Earth. I really enjoy the Shetland series. They’re not ground breaking, just solidly put together whodunnits. This continues that trend.

47- Miranda Sawyer- Uncommon People. I enjoyed this- 20 essays on “Britpop” bands but acts as a jumping off point to talk about cultural issues from the 90’s. Perfect for the nostalgia fest that is 2025
