Khan is a PhD candidate at the University of Cape Town’s Environmental Humanities South. Khan also runs Seed Biblioteek, a seed library guided by her assertion that "Seed is our land, heritage and future". The Mentorship Award is in partnership with the Goethe Institute.

South African artist Zayaan Khan received the Prince Claus Mentorship Award in the Cultural & Artistic Responses to the Environmental Crisis category. Khan's work explores justice in food, land, and seed using ceramic sculpture, sound, photography, video, writing, and more.
