Tonight was a perfect example of the importance of athletic trainers. As a coach who has had to go without one every now and again over 17 years it’s terrifying. We need to find a way to fund these professionals and get them on ALL high school sidelines across the country ASAP.

A year ago I shed some serious tears when I left North Valleys. It was hard to walk away from something I poured so much into. But getting to know the Sparks kids and be the head coach of such a historic program makes me thankful for the plan God laid out for me.

Not the whole squad, but guys from frosh to varsity, who busted their butt through a contact camp at manogue and competed against some of the best teams from Susanville to Fresno. We’re young but man we’re determined!

After 11 seasons and 3 schools I’ve officially retired from track coaching. I was fortunate to have state contenders at every school, and win a state runner up trophy, but the memories will always be the best part. Thanks athletes for letting me a part of the journey!

I’ll say it again, without athletics and after school activities we are headed for a different kind of crisis. One where substance abuse, neighborhood gangs, and other negative outlets have the upper hand. This is even more likely in the less affluent areas of town.

One of the things I love about sparks is its connection to the past. Not a lot of schools hold their prom in the gym anymore, but Sparks does. The students and staff do such a great job setting it up, it looks unrecognizable. It's awesome.

Memorial day weekend always reminds me of a friend, former teammate, weight lifting partner and one heck of a Marine, Jeremy Long. He gave his life fighting for freedom in Iraq shortly after we graduated high school, and has always been a real life hero to me.

After making the playoffs our first year I took it for granted. Thought every year would be more of the same. After a 2 season hiatus I’ve leaned we have to enjoy it, appreciate it and celebrate it. 6 out of 12 moved on this year, and we’re blessed to be one. Here we go!

Additionally, I’ll tell you what my senior year of football meant to me. It opened the door to my football coaching career. It’s gave me connections I cherish. Not to mention allowed me to work with and encourage at least 1000 athletes since. Senior football seasons matter.

I’ll tell you what’s kept me up the last 2 nights, It’s the fear of having to tell the first class that’s been with me for 4 years that they won’t get a season. So much hard work, dedication, and hurdles they have had to overcome. I just hope they get their last dance.
