A common question: "We have 3 kids. Only 1 wants the farm. Most of our wealth is in the farm. How do we pass it on while keeping the farm going & keep inheritance fair for all our kids?" → If you missed my email this morning, I gave 12 examples of fair ≠ equal. [link ⤵️]

New addition Both my wife & our 7 yr old daughter want to learn to play. I took lessons from my mom through Junior High. I hated it. Now I kinda want to pick it back up. We'll see. Funny how our tastes change over time. BTW, my mom agreed to give our daughter lessons.

@clintwfischer Entered a gilt in a national show earlier this week. Being an unknown at the national level, you set expectations at zero. After the auctioneer said "SOLD!", the pats on the back and handshakes from the ringmen and other breeders meant more than the $$$ she sold for.

He's a reminder that you can hail from a 500 population town in the middle of nowhere, South Dakota; go to the state FCS college (South Dakota State University @GoJacksFB); and impact the nation at the highest level of the game. That applies to more than just football.

One for me was: I usually leave for work at 5 or 6 am and get home about 5 or 5:30 pm. We've been crazy busy at the firm lately + doing some seminar events. Wednesday, I left the house at 5 am and had an evening seminar so didn't get home until about 9 pm. Which means I didn't

Majority of my estate planning clients (new plans and those wanting to review their plans) are 65+ I always ask about long term care insurance. They fall into one of two buckets: Either they bought it 5+ years ago and will dig through the couch cushions if needed to keep up

@clintwfischer Literally the STORY OF MY LIFE. I’m that local gal in your story. We left, and made our own farm. Hasn’t been easy, but 100% WORTH IT.

"Someday, all this will be yours…" A young man in Iowa heard that line for over a decade. Came back to the farm when his dad had a health scare. At the time, it was just for short-term help. He’d already started a solid career in ag retail after trade school because the farm

You can just do things. You can just rent a room for $50 from a Hy-Vee an hour away and hold a seminar explaining your product or service. Nobody is stopping you, except your own lack of gumption. Bonus tip: Hy-Vee said it's $50 for 2 hours use of their room and I said, "what

Now this is a structure I can get behind. Treat the operation like a family office, run it like a business, give exit/operator exit strategies. Allow for the thinking that a non-family member might be best suited to run/manage/own one enterprise within the business.
Interesting structure... Farmer has 3 sons in their diversified row crop, cow/calf, and feedlot operation. Plus a couple employees. Rather than making the sons legal partners and all the risks that come with that, he's set up a "Management Board." All 4 are on the board and

One of the top reasons people schedule an appointment to get their estate planning done/updated is... a family member passed on and left them with a mess to work through. They say, "I don't want my kids to have to go through what we just went through."
