Airbnb and landlord associations are investing heavily in city council races. Why? Look at how LA reported expenditure for the $1.28 billion American Rescue Plan Act COVID-relief funds. These numbers are striking.
Looked closer at the fine print on these twinsies mailers. Now why do you think Airbnb and the California Apartment Association would be sending the exact same message to get O'Farrell and Park elected?

The @BigLocalNews site offers a free service for any journalist to store massive datasets. Log in. Drag and drop a couple files. Boom, you’re done. That’s handy. But even a few minutes of manual work can be an obstacle. That’s where the Big Local News API comes in.🧵

When the complete picture of crime data and LASD costs is laid out, it’s difficult to see how contract cities benefit from the LASD’s monopoly over public safety narratives and budgets. In fact, it’s as difficult to see as a stolen phone in a crowded, dark nightclub.
A single deputy now costs West Hollywood taxpayers $358,000 annually. Last year, those deputies solved 2 smartphone thefts out of 249 reported. Reporting by @nikasoonshiong

Jared talked w/ @leanpub @frontmattercast about how he learned R and other computer programming. It involved a lot of self-teaching, plus some books, courses, and trial-and-error! https://t.co/pn152SfGEh

In an era filled with armchair epidemiologists, our talented friend and a credentialed epidemiologist, Dr. Paul Creswell has given us all a delightfully funny song and music video about the father of modern epidemiology.

We gotta admit we only read the book review not the book... but the review (and, no doubt, the book itself!) are worth your time to put the 1,000 takes on what the Census data all means and how America is changing in context:

At Civilytics we help government analytics teams build capacity. We’ve seen a lot of good and bad practices. But, when getting started, best practices can be too hard to replicate. So we wrote about the worst practices you should avoid. Read it here:

Another book we read recently -- fewer pithy quotes than Deborah Stone's book but lots of useful reminders: how hard the frequentist view of probability is to accurately explain, the problem w/ significance tests & large samples, etc. Check it out!

We believe it's important to explain data prep & analyses in plain language so someone can understand how the results were produced w/out reading code. That extra work is time-consuming so we hope someone finds it useful!

This is a really quick and easy but thought-provoking read. Instead of feeding our impulse to lecture and "teach," we should just fill the need.

We all make mistakes. How teachers respond has everything to do with whether or not their students feel valued as human beings.
