3. The prompts developed here provide a highly scalable sharer-focused intervention that changes how would-be sharers think about content rather and don't require labour intensive editing of the content itself to infuse "shareable" characteristics like emotionality.

2. Short prompts engaging thoughts regarding the self- and social-relevance of content may increase sharing intentions, although more work is needed to understand conflicts between self-report and 🧠data.

In short: 1. We provide stronger empirical support to prior theory regarding the importance of social- and self-rel. processes in sharing decisions. This influence of non-accuracy motives may be a source of politically or otherwise biased sharing and information environments.

We also found sign. increases in sharing intention ratings in response to the Help Somebody, but not the Describe Yourself prompt. Interestingly, there was a positive indirect effect of Describe Yourself instructions on sharing through self-related and social 🧠activity.

In line w/ pre-reg. hypotheses, considering to use content to Describe Yourself (self-rel) and Help Somebody (social-rel) - vs. control - increased brain activity in a priori regions chosen for their role in self-related and social processing.

We developed manipulations that causally engage thoughts about self- & social-relevance of media content ("Use this content to Describe Yourself/Help Somebody") in would-be sharers. We observe 1) 🧠responses in regions prev. associated w sharing & 2) changes in sharing intentions.

This model is based on reverse inferences, that is post-hoc interpretations of psych. processes that may underlie observed 🧠activity in specific regions which was correlated with sharing. Such inferences are limited, bc each 🧠region supports many different psych. experiences.

Social content sharing impacts what information is or is not widely available & impactful. Based on neural & self-report data (e.g. , the value-based model of sharing suggests that key psych. drivers of sharing are the self- & social-relevance of content.
