I've been following Team Japan in the ISU 2024 #SkateCanada. Three of their figure skaters are skating to my music, and two just medaled! Huge congrats to Rino Matsuike for silver ("Lux Aeterna"), Hana Yoshida for bronze ("Temen Oblak") and Sota Yamamoto ("Sogno di Volare").

It's here! Civilization VII has just been released, and I was honored to once again write the main theme for the game. This new piece is called 'Live Gloriously' and it's a setting of quotes from four different ancient epics (The Iliad, Beowulf, Ramayana and Popol Vuh).

Story time! We were at a museum in Amsterdam when we noticed a Korean man staring at me. Finally after making eye contact he lifted his finger, pointed to me, and slowly said “. Baba Yetu?”. So my funny wife got me this for Christmas the following year. I ❤️ my Korean fans! 🇰🇷

Apparently Mozambique has signed peace accord between the government and the armed opposition party. And Baba Yetu was the chosen music for the ceremony! #civilization #civ4 #music #composergoal.
Fun fact: while the signing took place, an orchestra and choir performed a song called Baba Yetu, originally composed for the computer game Civilization IV. A game that is generally not associated with peace. but conquest and warfare.

One of the probs with conducting your own sessions is that you don't have a free hand to take notes while recording. So I keep a little 🙂 stamp in my left hand, and if I hear something wrong, I stamp it on the fly. By the end of the session my score looks really happy to see me!

I'm writing a new choral piece right now. It's a simple one. Very tuneful, almost like a hymn. Unfussy, uncomplicated. all about modest beauty. It's one that you and your friends can sing softly together late at night, perhaps around a campfire, or walking home from the pub.
