Big day for me with the publication of the new edition of THE MASTER, my best-seller on

& his rivalries.
In time for the

You can find it here or in independent bookstores:

Emma Raducanu, an 18-year-old from Britain, becomes the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam singles title. Takes the US Open with an ace to close out her 6-4 6-3 victory over Leylah Fernandez of Canada. Did not drop a set in 10 matches. One of the great tennis stories

I just asked Djokovic about this. He said he did not know the boy but he had heard the boy had been supporting him throughout the match, even offering him detailed tactics. Djokovic said if anyone deserved the racket after the final, it was him.
It happens so rarely, but I still think it's worth exploring. When a player withdraws this late in a Grand Slam or before a major tour final, the beaten player should be able to take the slot. In this case Fritz would play Kyrgios as a "lucky loser".
The show must go on
Pure Venus Williams tonight after her doubles win with Jamie Murray

to go all the way?
VENUS: Are you going to write a good article
or a halfway decent one?

Taylor Fritz calls the new trial allowing in-match coaching on the ATP Tour "a dumb rule" and says he's not using it
I asked him why it's dumb (and agree 100 percent with his answer):
Copy of letter sent by WTA chief Steve Simon to the Chinese Ambassador to the United States about Peng Shuai
"Simply put, the WTA is at a crossroads in China. I hope I can rely on you to convey these messages to the leadership in China so this issue can be resolved"
We report that Maria Sharapova is retiring from pro tennis at age 32. Not weary of the game but tired of fighting her body. Once No. 1, she won 5 Slam singles titles & earned tens of millions on & off the court. By force of will & personality she was one of the game’s true stars

Really disturbing to see Kyrgios smash a racket in defeat (after the handshake) that rebounds and comes very close to hitting a ballboy. This stuff needs to stop, and he's not alone
It's been one year since Kikkan Randall won Olympic gold; 9 months since she discovered she had breast cancer, less than a month since her last radiation treatment. And she just finished 12th in Saturday's 50 Kilometer American Birkebeiner race. Remarkable
This match may not be remembered this way but no one who follows tennis should forget how well Naomi Osaka played in her first Grand Slam final. Marvelous, poised, powerful performance.
A couple things clear to me after that men's final
Best of 5 is worth fighting for
In-match coaching is not worth fighting for
There's a purity and, every once in a while, majesty to letting the best players in the world problem solve, long form

The Djokovic hearing continues and 127 other tennis players would like to know at what time they are playing tomorrow at the Australian Open
How long can they be kept waiting?
A Medvedev title in Australia would take him to No. 2 in the rankings. Nobody not named Djokovic, Federer, Nadal or Murray has been in the top two in men's tennis for 16 years....

Gabriela Sabatini, one of tennis's great prodigies, turns 50. A shy person who had to learn to accept the limelight, she was part of some of the most memorable matches of the late 80s and early 90s. She remains an icon in Argentina, which has been marking the occasion all week
Federer’s craziest stat: never retired from any singles or doubles match on tour. 1526 singles matches. 223 doubles. Connors only man to play more tour singles matches retired from 14. Djokovic 13; Nadal 9
Touching, open press conference from Coco Gauff, still wiping away the tears but comfortable enough in her skin to share her hopes and vulnerabilities despite the disappointment. A remarkable 18-year-old or better yet, just remarkable period
Touching words from retiring Frenchman Gilles Simon after his final match on tour: a loss to Felix Auger Aliassime at the Paris Masters.
In his farewell speech, Simon saved his wife Carine Lauret for last:
So if Valieva finishes second or third they are going to deny the cloud-free Olympic gold medalist a ceremony and the anthem and the memories? Bad call, the latest bad call
"After the match I think she proved she’s a true athlete. For me the definition of an athlete is someone who on the court treats you like their worst enemy but after they treat you like you're their best friend. And I think that's what she did today" - Coco Gauff on Naomi Osaka
Neither chronic foot pain, nor Covid, nor a long break from the game can keep Nadal from coming back and reaching the

Still in the hunt for No. 21

Kyrgios has been given plenty of chances through the years and been cut plenty of slack by the tour. He is not a kid anymore. His misbehavior on court is a clear pattern of behavior. ATP is right to crack down
"I wish everyone could have my parents because they always let me choose whatever I wanted to, even when I was younger. I made also some other sports and they never put pressure on me, and I wish this freedom is possible for as many young kids as possible"

This has to stop. The more you let it slide or slap it on the wrist the more it will increase. This, in my book, should be an automatic default, even if, as in Indian Wells or here, the ballperson dodged the racket.
Rafael Nadal stands alone in men’s
