One reason I'm a YES on the WGA strike authorization vote is I'm one of 216 feature writers Netflix severely underpaid residuals to. And I never would’ve known I was owed that money if the WGA hadn’t taken Netflix to arbitration for Bird Box.
#WGAStrong
friendly reminder that not only did netflix take away the iconic song "fly me to the moon" from evangelion, they also censored the show's gay media! congrats netflix you managed to fuck up one of your biggest titles
Shadow and Bone friends, I just wanna say that we appreciate you all so much. Thank you for all the streaming and cheering you’ve done for our show.❤️
Don’t know our odds of renewal, or when we’ll know, but I want YOU to know, we know you did everything you could. We see you.❤️
I see people asking if we can just publish the SoC scripts (and I guess Demon in the Wood) but we can't. Netflix paid us for them so they technically own them.
But one day, when I'm less sad, maybe I'll just summarize them all for you. But I gotta go be sad first.
@christinastrain
if you can publish them anywhere that will allow us to celebrate your work and give you money at the same time PLEASE do it if it’s legally an option haha <33
I also want to remind people that Netflix laid off literally hundreds of people last year. All for what? So that the top brass could soak up their salaries? Fuck this.
Netflix is demanding shareholders approve over $166 million in retroactive executive pay for 2022.
By contrast, the writers strike ends if Netflix agreed to a contract that would cost the streamer an estimated $68 million a year.
I know most of you don’t know much about South Korean history, but trust me when I tell you that Squid Game is a perfect example of how you do social commentary using genre.
This is how Netflix used to do things. We wrote s2 before s1 and were greenlit for production off s1. The SoC room was commissioned in 2021 (after s2) but because things changed internally at Netflix, never greenlit to production. Our scripts have been on ice for over a year.
my current theory is that the spinoff is already confirmed and in the works and they r only using this as means to get the s2 rates higher🙏 delusion🙏 but fr why hire a whole bunch of writers to write a script that possibly wont even happen
Guys, last year, I sold a script to Netflix. And right now,
@judeweng
's shooting our movie in Hawaii!
Now that I can FINALLY talk about it, lemme tell you about how I wrote a movie FULL of Asian-Pacific Islanders, and how it's actually being made!
A friend told me Eric told the internet about our "Lamb," so I came running back to tell you more.
There were several eps where Matthias called Wylan, "Lamb," but the first was in mine. Which was a Wylan centric episode. Here's a little thread on how it went down:
According to a conversation someone had with Eric, there was a scene in the spinoff where Matthias calls Wylan a lamb as an endearment and Jesper gets jealous. We could’ve had both jealous Jesper AND Wylan. I hate it here

If you are PreWGA and Netflix contacts you this way, do not engage. This strike will eventually come to an end and you do not want to go on record as scabbing. It isn’t worth it.
PSA: Hey friends Netflix is currently trying to recruit PRE wga writers into their already predatory apprenticeship program. I reported this and it is strike breaking behavior.
When EA acquired Respawn,
@jonshiring
(who’s a programmer) came home and told me about this. He’s not allowed to do ANYTHING without EA’s permission, including write a book or make music. Again, he was hired as a PROGRAMMER. It’s unethical. The games industry needs a union.
Christina Strain set out to write "a Goonies style movie in Hawaii that was about family, culture, and heritage.”
That film is Finding 'Ohana, it premieres January 29 and here's your first look at director Jude Weng’s gorgeous visuals!
One day I'm just going to do a twitter thread specifically about the Inej episode
@prathikshasrini
and
@joshspeed667
wrote just because I think the world was robbed of a painfully spectacular episode of television. All mourners all funerals in my heart.
That’s right, back in 2021 we wrote the whole first season, and I got to write an episode primarily dedicated to Wylan. I just hope we get to make it.
"Shadow and Bone" team has been quietly working on "Six of Crows" spin-off
The fact that the Wall Street Journal is calling out that the AMPTP wanted to leak these details earlier AND that it’s to “create tension within the union” should tell you everything you need to know about how transparently bad this tactic was.
Just wanna say THANK YOU to the Grishaverse fans for how tirelessly you pounded your drums for us. Maybe one day I'll do an AMA about the SoC season we wrote, AND tell you all about the Demon in the Wood stand alone I wrote but we never got to shoot. 😭
THIS IS A MISLEADING TWEET.
Most writers rooms have several writers in it. And a lot are pretty close to these numbers. The goal of codifying the min # of writers is to PREVENT the studios from DECREASING the number of writers in a room. Which is WHAT THEY ARE TRYING TO DO.
The WGA wants a minimum TV staff size based on the number of episodes in a season. Here’s how the mandate would work for the most recent season of some top shows.
So what you need to know about this clip is the horse behind Jessie has to poop,
@archierenaux
sees it "pooping on Jessie's head," does his best not to laugh, and then Jessie -- seeing Archie's face -- is desperately not trying to react so she BLINKS it away.

I'm not entirely sure I'll ever have the words to fully express how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to help shape a character 15-year-old half-Asian me needed, but thank you
@HIGHzurrer
and
@LBardugo
. Alina means the world to me.
#shadowandbone
Listen, I'm one of those mixed race writers in this room, and I'm telling you right now that casting a half-Asian Alina Starkov is very much the hill I'm willing to fight for/die on. Teen me needed her, so grown up me is going to try to make sure she exists. Let's do this!
Multiple writers in the room are mixed race, and their voices help shape Alina's. Thank you for joining us on this adventure! cc:
@LBardugo
If you wish to audition for ALINA only, you can submit your rep/contact info to:
shadowbonecasting (at) gmail.
Do you want more Shadow and Bone? Do you want Six of Crows? Then listen to Brian. The decisions are made based on these numbers, so please spread the word.
Dear fans of Shadow & Bone:
For reasons related to [REDACTED], it is vitally important that you watch the brilliant season 2 within the first 28 days of release. More than once, if so inclined. But the 1st month is what counts.
NO MOURNERS. NO FUNERALS.

HEY ACTORS! The new Netflix series I'm now (based on the YA novels Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows) is looking to cast our lead actress. And we're specifically looking for a HALF-ASIAN woman who looks about 17ish.
Grishaverse followers! CASTING announcement.
We are kicking off with an international search for ALINA before we start on other roles.
For the series, Alina is half Shu (Asian). It is a decision Leigh and I made together after a lengthy discussion of the character.
Attention all LA based Grishaverse fans!

writers room would like to invite you to join the us and the WGA in picketing Netflix on June 13th! Make a sign, put on comfy walking shoes, and come meet us out on the line! ✨✨✨
And if we don’t get renewed, don’t blame yourselves. I saw someone posting about this, so I wanna reiterate that you’ve all gone above and beyond. I understand the pressure and stress you’re feeling— I’ve been living it for over a year— be kind to yourself. We all tried our best.
Oh god. I see a handful of you freaking out. I seriously don’t know where we are at Netflix. I just went into mom mode because I saw someone on twitter worried that they’d blame themselves for a cancellation if they stopped streaming. You’re doing great, guys!!!
I’m a US citizen who was born overseas because my dad was an Air Force officer stationed in Korea. This is fucking INSANE. Denying military dependents their US citizenship for being born wherever their parents are stationed—while in service of OUR COUNTRY—is bullshit.
Today USCIS issued guidance that DHS "no longer considers children of U.S. government employees and U.S. armed forces members residing outside the United States as 'residing in the United States' for purposes of acquiring citizenship” --
Love a good Eldritch God. So I'll leave you all with this:
Wylan's SoC episode has the origin story behind the piano tune he played in ep 4 of Shadow and Bone season 2.
I wish I had something to share on the S&B and SoC front but I have nothing. We're still waiting on Netflix.
But thank you for asking!!! Cause from what I can tell, Netflix HAS NOTICED how passionate the Grishaverse fans are. So all your rallying has _absolutely_ had an impact!
And with TV mini rooms preventing consistent/livable wages, lower & mid-level writers not being sent to set to learn production, and showrunners left with little/no support during production, the studios have broken the system from top to bottom. But WE can fix this.
#WGAStrong
Ladies, I know all the comic news right now is fucking awful, but please, please, don't let it prevent you from pursuing your dreams. If you want to make comics, make comics. For things to get better, we need YOU.
So, after YEARS of knowing
@LBardugo
and reading all of her amazing books, I'm excited to say that I'll be a writer on
@HIGHzurrer
's adaptation of Shadow and Bone!
LIKE CALLS TO LIKE, BISHES!
So now Matthias wants to know about Wylan. Like, why is he with the Crows? He's not like them. He's not a criminal. Wylan jokes that he's like Trassel, and that he was "released into the wild." Matthias bursts out laughing and tells Wylan he's not a wolf. He's more of a lamb.✨
The studios will never look out for our best interests— it’s not in their business model. But the guild will. Because WE are the guild and we know what we need to take care of each other. So please vote yes on today’s strike authorization vote.
#WGAStrong
I don't know one TV writer who hasn't had to deal with toxic fandoms, and the worst part is that the only real way to "deal" with it is to either ignore it or leave social media completely. And both options suck cause neither fixes the issue.
Awww, I'm glad so many of you enjoyed this.
Maybe one day I'll tell you about another scene in which Matthias is having a shitty time, and admits something honest and heartbreaking to Wylan.
...I might love breaking characters hearts. 🥲
@EvoSquareYT
@prathikshasrini
@joshspeed667
There was. I wrote it. It's one of my favorite scripts I've ever written and maybe one day I'll talk about it. For now, just know it went into his relationship with his dad, Jesper, and the start of a deep friendship with Matthias.
Also, side note. I wrote this scene with the specific goal of getting the nickname "Lamb" onto the show because of our resident office dog, Lambchop. In season one of S&B, I named Milo after
@daeganf
's dog Milo, so for this season I wanted to get
@Slaydonistic
's pup in there. 💖
MAX is also rushing to fix credits cause if they didn’t, they’d have to pay FINES to MULTIPLE UNIONS. Thanks to protections provided by MBA contracts of the past, MAX can’t diminish us into faceless no ones. A good example of why we gotta hold steady on our asks NOW.
Look at how quick they moved in fixing the credits issue. I don’t buy one second it was an oversight. They meant that shit. But look how fast they do make change when we all band together? Meaning we need all three unions in this so we can get back to work. DGA, WGA, SAG-AFTRA.
One of the worst things about being half-white/Asian in Hollywood, is listening to non-biracial producers, directors, execs & writers talk about how mixed race characters could be "MORE" POCs if they were just less white. Like I'm not a person, just a watered down paint swatch.
On the Ferolind, Wylan needs Matthias to confirm/correct his drawing of the Ice Court but Matthias isn't playing ball. He's pissed/aggressively carving a small isenulf figure. So Wylan tries to connect by telling him about the time his dad took him to the Ice Court.
ANYWAY, this warms Matthias up a bit. So Wylan asks if Matthias had an isenulf, and Matthias talks about Trassel. Wylan asks if he's gonna look for him when they get back to Fjerda, but Matthias can't. Post his capture, Trassel was released back into the wild. Without a pack.
And it's a sweet. Van Eck saw how enamored little Wylan was with a Drüskelle's Isenulf, so Van Eck doted on him by arranging for a Drüskelle to take little Wylan to a kennel full of Isenulf puppies. Clearly a good memory. But by now you also know Van Eck's a monster dad so... 😬
"...the Queen [makes] a passing comment regarding Alina looking “Shu enough” and [asks] Kirigan to translate ‘good morning’ in Shu. When Alina tells her she doesn’t speak Shu, the queen asks something that many Asians have [heard], “Then, what are you?”
This was based on my life
And this isn’t even the first time this has happened to me at Netflix. This’ll be the 2ND full season of TV I’ve done for them that may never get made. But also, it REALLY sucks for the staff writers who won’t ever get these writing credits that could help bolster their careers.
Here's Seema Verma suggesting that one reason South Korea has been so effective in responding to the coronavirus is because it isn't a "free" country like the United States
From the chaebol player, to the VIPs nationalities, the Front Man’s phone being a US gov. issued base phone, the inclusion of a N. Korean & foreign player, and the fact that the games started in 1988… it’s ALL commentary on what S. Korea’s become. I can’t stop thinking about it.
Not sure what she was going to say about “a focused episode” but I will say this, each episode was named after a different character, so… take that as you will. 😘
@magicmoonstones
SoC wasn't rejected 3 times. Netflix unexpectedly commissioned the room and then didn't greenlight production. We had no control over that.
But I see you're a Darklina fan, and now I understand what's going on. Shame, cause I was actually really excited to talk to you about her.
