Jesse Meadows: "An ‘understandable reaction’ is a bad day, but an illness is a re-organization of your entire lifeworld. Collapsing all mental distress into the ordinary erases this difference and denies the reality of disablement."

Philosophers keep flooding the zone with new categories of epistemic injustice until the concept no longer makes sense. I call this "epistemic swamping."

In situations where some physicians would admit involuntarily but others would not, holding patients against their will leaves them worse off. My discussion of a new paper in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York Staff Reports 🔗👇🏽

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers. The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

I’m relieved that this says that PAs must not be used to replace psychiatrists, but am underwhelmed by this guidance and left unclear exactly what we think the role of PAs in our services should be. Without such clear definition, the dangers are obvious.
