quite like this figure showing the massive increase in detail from climate models. old ones though - much faster to run - still really useful.
Climate models show simulations of our present and future #climate. With increased computer power the level of detail has increased significantly, from a model with ~1800 grid boxes about 20 yrs ago to a state-of-the-art model using ~780,000 grid boxes 👇#BSW24

But urgent action also brings hope. Quicker we reduce emissions the more we limit ongoing damage. 1.5 is not a cliff-edge end-of-world.But the longer we wait, the more pain we endure until we finally take it seriously.(a good watch on how it might unfold: .

Vanishingly small carbon budget left to stay within 1.5 without overshoot. Chances diminish further everytime a government reneges on empty promises towards reducing emissions. Sadly this will lead to the now annual headline later in 2024 of “record CO2 levels measured this year”.

As we would expect in an El Niño year, not only global T rising faster, but CO2 itself rises faster. While the ENSO effect is temporary, the ongoing build up from (increasing) fossil fuels results in yet more global warming and impacts.
Our forecast of the atmospheric CO2 rise for 2024 is out 🧵. To limit global warming to 1.5°C, the build-up of CO2 in the air would need to stop very soon. But with a rise of 2.84 ± 0.54 ppm expected this year, there's no sign that the CO2 rise is slowing.
