It’s hard to listen to the debate on border security having grown up on the US/Mexico border, crossed it hundreds of times, and be a practicing immigration attorney dealing with border security issues every day. There are so many lies and myths. Here is some reality.
As a Texas Ex, I’m extremely disappointed in the leadership of
@JCHartzell
.
@UTAustin
has had vigorous and robust protests for decades without this type of police response. The disrespect of students’ constitutional rights is absolutely unacceptable.
Here is UT President Jay Hartzell’s full statement, explaining the protesters stated they were “going to violate Institutional Rules.”
I’m eager to learn exactly which rules they expected to be broken, and why the anticipation of rule-breaking necessitated today’s response.
The
@atxpoa
statement regarding last night's election results is unacceptable; it is inherently undemocratic and contemptuous of the 79% of Austin voters who supported strong police accountability/oversight AND overwhelmingly rejected the weaker police association measure.
The Austin Police Association is aware of the election results and is taking immediate action to determine the city's intentions regarding the implementation and enforcement of the illegal provisions contained in Prop A. The APA simply will not stand by while this city and 1/4

board meeting! I commit to using public transit as much as possible so I can understand the customer experience as we set policy.
My question for those opposed to allowing more homes per lot: if not this then what? What changes do you suggest to help affordability in Austin? Our current zoning is only producing $500k plus homes; the status quo is unacceptable.
Austinites crowded City Hall Thursday to play out a familiar fight: Should we change rules over what can be built in the city and where? In the past, opponents to these changes have drowned out supporters.
But that appears to be shifting:
I’m excited to announce I’m planning to run for Austin City Council, District 4! As an immigration attorney, I work with people every day who are struggling to stay in Austin. We must be a welcoming city for working class people, not a playground for the wealthy.
Unanimous vote from the Houston City Council to permanently close 7 blocks around its light rail downtown to vehicles. Lessons here for Austin and the Drag.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! MIL GRACIAS!!!
I am so grateful and humbled by the results. Thanks to the voters who put their faith and trust in me. Thanks to my campaign staff, volunteers, donors and all my other supporters who sent goodwill and prayers our way. 1/3
Has any city in the country done more in the last six months to boost housing than Austin?
✅ Legalize small lots/duplexes/triplexes
✅ Streamline permitting for projects less than 4 units
✅ Eliminate parking minimums
✅ Allow additional height for multi family projects.
I cannot support the hiring of Art Acevedo. There are too many red flags from his previous tenures as police chief, both here and in the other cities he’s served.
EXCLUSIVE: Art Acevedo is returning to Austin in a new $271k City Hall position overseeing policing, interim City Manager Jesus Garza tells us.

but when San Francisco tore down their bayfront highway it truly transformed the city for the better. We can do this in Austin by burying I-35 from Ladybird Lake to US Hwy 290 and reconnecting our city.
At 9 AM today, I took the oath of office and officially began my term as Austin City Council Member for District 4.
Thank you again to all the voters, volunteers, staff, friends, and family that got me to the dais. I’m incredibly honored.

We need to shade every single playground in every city park in Austin. The heat makes them virtually unusable during summer, when kids really need recreation and play.
Taking your kids to the playground this summer? This safety message is for you! Special thanks to
@domnewlandtv
and our friends at
@KVUE
for asking us to help out with this very important story.
The City of Austin must do everything we can to protect abortion rights. That includes decriminalizing abortion locally, an approach similar to our policy towards marijuana arrests. No enforcement, no investigations, no arrests.
Excited to co-sponsor a
@LesliePoolATX
item that brings more affordable options for folks trying to buy a home in Austin. Our median home price is now $609,500, up from $371,250 just 5 years ago. We must create lower priced home options for our residents.
Houston has shown Austin that allowing homes on smaller lots helps increase affordability without gentrification and displacement! A recent study by
@UTAustin
and
@pewtrusts
confirms this (h/t
@JackCraver

Hope to see more headlines like this in 2024! Proud of the work
#ATXCouncil
has done on housing, but there is still more to do. Reducing compatibility, allowing smaller lot sizes and rezoning the areas around our planned light rail stations are all on the agenda.
Austin is finally moving forward with a light rail system! This is a huge step for our city. I’m glad
@ATP_org
has developed a realistic & robust set of plans for the first light rail routes.
The draft plans released yesterday affect only two lines from the Project Connect plan.
The winter storms of the last few years have shown we’ve got to bury power lines as part of disaster preparedness and grid resilience. I will keep pushing for this at
#atxcouncil
"So why don't they bury power lines so tree limbs don't keep falling on them?" you might ask.
@CMChitoVela
asked
@austinenergy
's Thomas Pierpoint that question last year.
Basically: It's too expensive.
I love you, Uvalde. My heart breaks for you. Those are my people. Chicanos. Tejanos. Fronterizos. They’re hurting bad today. Everyone in Austin mourns with you. Texas weeps for your lost children.
We did it!
#ATXCouncil
voted 8-2 to initiate citywide changes that would make it easier to build apartments and missing middle housing! I promised to fight for housing affordability when I was elected and I’ve kept that promise. We’re not done, but this is a big step.
Texas’ cities are increasingly pushing back on highway expansions in favor of projects that connect the urban fabric and promote good development. We can do that with I-35 in Austin!
Five Dallas Council Members Call for Independent Study of I-345 Removal
Traffic congestion on CA's Highway 101 remains unchanged, despite the recent completion of an almost $600m project that included fifteen miles of widening.
Now, advocates are asking: "At what point do we stop doing something we know isn't working?"
It’s unconscionable that Austin’s NIMBYs are suing to end Affordability Unlocked, a zoning program geared toward our poorest and most vulnerable. This 4 year old program is critical for building PSH for the homeless, family violence shelters and other deeply affordable units.
This morning, I was glad to stand alongside
@RepCasar
,
@CMChitoVela
, and a powerful group of champions for housing in Austin at the AURA Austin housing rally. Thanks to all who joined - I hear you and I am eager to keep working towards a more affordable and accessible Austin.
BREAKING:
@GregCasar
announces his endorsement of Chito Vela for City Council. Greg says, “District 4 deserves a leader who will fight for our communities, and Chito is that candidate. He’ll show up for working families, and that’s why he has my vote.”
I’m excited for the
#ATX
planning commission meeting tonight discussing minimum lot sizes! Austin has the opportunity to legalize small lot homes common in many American cities. In this video, I discuss how these and other housing reforms are very good for the Latino community.
BREAKING: Nearly nine out of 10 people arrested on misdemeanors by Texas DPS since starting a controversial operation with Austin police are Black or Hispanic, data obtained today show.
The information has prompted a meeting of top officials today about the operation's future.1/2
The reality is the US/Mexico border is secure. There are more border patrol agents than there have ever been Those agents have better resources, technology and support than ever. And they are chasing after fewer and fewer people crossing illegally into the US.
It’s unfortunate the Austin Police Association leadership decided to stop contract negotiations. I remain open to a 1-year extension that improves pay & benefits for our hardworking police officers.
I look forward to passing a long term contract after the election.
The new
@Austin_Police
data portal is up and running! It was created in response to a council resolution I passed and has basic info about crimes in Austin, sortable by year, month, type of crime, etc. One quick observation: crime is down since 2022.
This is the right decision, especially given the events of the last few days. Policing in Austin must be aligned with our community values. Unfortunately, the type of policing we have seen by DPS is not in line w Austin’s values.
Eddie Rodriguez voted against the statewide camping ban but now sends mailers attacking
@GregCasar
for lifting Austin’s camping ban? Can’t have it both ways. Cheap and disingenuous attack.
A dozen elected Texas Democrats have signed an open letter to Eddie Rodriguez, condemning an ad his congressional campaign mailed to voters using what they describe as "Republican-style tactics."
The built results of Portland’s liberalization of single-dwelling zones now allowing up to four units by-right. A little bit of market research demonstrates that these sell for 60-80% less than a new build single-detached in the same neighborhood.

@JosePGarza

Bad news for those still without electricity at this point. The remaining repairs are the most difficult/complex and may take longer. My sincere apologies, but I want folks to be aware so they can prepare. See the update from the city below.
Vote for
@RolandForTexas
for US Senate! Roland has been an effective State Senator and a fierce advocate for the people of Uvalde, who he represents. He supports Medicare for All and supports a ceasefire in Gaza. He’s the progressive choice in the Democratic primary.
I have a complete overhaul of Austin's extremely strict compatibility rules on this week's agenda! Relaxing this rule will allow for more housing to help address Austin's affordability challenges. The link to the agenda item is below. 🧵
Fly by night PACs recently spent $50,000 in attack ads against me! Don't believe the lies. I’m running on a 25 year record of political activism and community service. I’m running on a pro-housing, pro-transit, pro-criminal justice reform platform. 1/2
@chitovela3
We treated them with courtesy and respect. We never interrupted them. We have a right to speak to voters too. They can feel free to counter. Heck, this voter didn't even go our way, yet we showed respect. Too bad for you we have proof of your lies.
Congratulations,
@chitovela3
, on your election to City Council!
I know how important it is that we have leaders fighting on behalf of working families, and the people of District 4 are lucky to have you in Austin City Hall representing them.
I'm so excited to welcome our newest family member. One of my Windsor Park neighbors rescued her from the street and we couldn't help but take her in. Look at that face!
The housing crisis in Austin is easing a bit. Rents are dropping as housing supply increased. And
#ATXCouncil
passed reforms that should increase housing supply even further. Lots more to do, but the current trend is positive for renters and homebuyers.
US government statistics confirm all of this. In 1992, when I graduated high school, 4,000 border patrol agents apprehended 1.2 million people illegally entering the US. In 2017, 19,000 border patrol agents apprehended just 310,000 people.
Here comes the cavalry!! Great to see a fleet of
@cpsenergy
trucks in the Windsor Park neighborhood! Thank you, San Antonio!! The lines in this area were badly damaged by falling limbs and folks have been without electricity since early Wednesday.
City staff published the analysis I requested of how Austin's compatibility rules affect housing! There are some really interesting findings and very good recommendations. Some highlights for you housing nerds out there:
Inspired seeing 150+ people Saturday morning at a public forum on rebuilding I-35. Most everyone opposes massive expansion, they want to bury/remove the highway and reconnect east and west Austin - not just downtown, but all the way north to Hwy 290. We can do it!
It's a big job, going to cost a lot, take years and be a huge headache, but I think we have to bury the electric lines. Reminds me of the old saying - How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
.
@chitovela3
asks about burying lines. Riley says it costs $150k for a mile of overhead power lines. Burying a mile of lines costs $1.5 million.
AE has 12k miles of power lines. Assuming half are overhead, it'd cost a lot to bury lines – he says $12 billion.
@LoewyLawFirm
There’s mountains of evidence that more available housing helps affordability. And it’s basic market economics. It’s not an assumption. It’s a theory that’s been tested and proven.
Riding
@CapMetroATX
’s MetroRail for the first time in a long time! I’ve really been enjoying riding our bus/rail network it’s cheap, convenient and pleasant.
I’m happy to announce a new campaign supporter, State Rep. Sheryl Cole!
@SherylCole1
and I both ran for the seat in 2018 and she won in a runoff. Sheryl has done a great job and I’m proud to have her support.
This charter amendment is not about so-called "anti-police activists". It's about a city whose residents have long called for stronger police oversight and less aggressive police tactics. It's about a police association that fights and undermines those calls at every opportunity.
Not arresting people found w small amounts of marijuana has saved countless hours of law enforcement’s time and lots of tax dollars. It’s allowed police to focus on more serious offenses while they are short staffed. Decriminalizing marijuana IS pro-public safety!
New: Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing five cities — Austin, San Marcos, Killeen, Elgin and Denton — to block their ordinances decriminalizing low-level marijuana possession.
We must end COVID capacity restrictions at Austin’s homeless shelters.
At this point in the pandemic, it is more dangerous for people to sleep outside than it is for them to be in a shelter. We need room to house the people that Prop B forces us to evict.
#OpenTheShelters
Interesting takeaway from city budget hearing. Austin Roller Derby community practices outdoors at Bartholomew Park near Mueller neighborhood. They'd appreciate the city find room in the budget for some shade in this kind of weather.
We tallied about 50 people sleeping under bridges & in tents this morning as part of the Point In Time Count. They were all friendly and welcoming. Sadly,

The ice storm canceled our I-35 town hall, but I want to highlight a few of my concerns. We NEED more & better connections between east and west Austin on I-35! In central Austin, the avg distance is .35 miles between crossings. In the north and south, the distances get worse.
This
#ATXCouncil
is aggressively legalizing housing in Austin and we’re already seeing the results. Austin led the nation in housing construction in 2023 and rents fell 7%. Let’s keep this going! Abundant housing and transit helps our working class!
My resolution de-prioritizing enforcement of Texas’ trans healthcare ban is at
#ATXCouncil
this Thursday. Come testify!
Texans should be able to make their own healthcare decisions, whether it’s to terminate a pregnancy or how to treat a child struggling w gender dysphoria.
TRANS TEXANS & ALLIES: Stand up for trans kids at the Austin City Council meeting THIS THURSDAY!
The Austin City Council is voting to deprioritize enforcement of Texas's trans healthcare ban, and we need YOUR support to make sure the measure passes.
As a boy growing up in Laredo, border security was light in the 1980’s & 90’s. We didn’t have to show ID when entering the US, we were often just waived through after declaring our citizenship.
And today many (most?) of the apprehensions are of women and children who cross the river and immediately look for a border patrol agent to turn themselves into.
We had a special guest blockwalking today!
@gregcasar
took time out to say hi to the volunteers and knock doors! Thanks again for all your support, Greg.
TODAY IS THE DAY!
District 4 voters, please get to one of these locations anytime between 7 am and 7 pm today.
Remember - if you're in line at 7, they have to let you vote 🗳️
Council understands Prop A puts nation-leading standards of oversight/accountability on our cops. We're willing to pay them commensurate with those demands! But we need a police union that understands the demands and expectations of Austin residents and is willing to adapt.
Godspeed, brother. One of the most effective city council members I’ve seen in 25 years of following Texas politics. I know he’s going to bring that passion and energy to Congress!!
Today was my last meeting on the
#ATX
City Council.
I am deeply honored & grateful for the trust, support, & kindness from so many of you the last seven years.
The struggle continues, but I have no doubt that our work together has made a very real difference in people’s lives.
When Austin mandated water breaks for construction workers, it was a big step for basic labor protections, especially for our immigrant community.
#ATXCouncil
will fight to protect this ordinance and our constitutional right to govern ourselves.
The new APD data portal is getting quite a workout thanks to the DA’s race! Remember to vote for
@JosePGarza
for DA. Too many lies being thrown around by the other side.
1. This is completely false. A blatant lie. The fact that a journalist is printing this verifiable falsehood ONE DAY BEFORE AN ELECTION so that it can’t be rebutted is journalistic malpractice in the extreme. And yes, I have receipts. 🧵
We early voted!! Camilo cast his own little ballot. Get out there and vote for a pro-housing, pro-transit, pro-criminal justice reform candidate!!

Great thread on TxDOT’s recently released plan for I-35. My staff and I are currently reviewing the plan. While the plan has improved, it is still not where it needs to be. We can’t squander this once in a generation opportunity to rebuild I-35.
1/ PLANS TO WIDEN I-35 have been narrowed by TxDOT from two designs to one. You can leave a public comment on the project until March 7, so here's some of what TxDOT prefers to do.
Yesterday, Austin voters overwhelmingly rejected spending tens of millions of dollars to massively expand our police force. This vote shows broad support for continuing to reimagine and reform policing in Austin, a policy I support.

WE DID IT!! Austin has passed the
#GRACEAct
10-0 and decriminalized abortion! We also passed other measures supporting reproductive rights. Austin is strong in support of abortion rights and reproductive rights.
NOW: Austin City Council approves resolution to de-prioritize enforcement of Texas' abortion laws.
This passed 10-0. Council Member Mackenzie Kelly is absent.
Excited to have passed Item 28 today, eliminating parking mandates citywide while also ensuring access for people with disabilities. Austin is now the largest American city to join this trend. Thank you to all of the advocates who showed up today in support of this item! 🙌
Loved speaking to
@WalkableAustin
’s Urban Studies 301 class about Project Connect! The students want a walkable, transit oriented Austin with plenty of housing. So do I!
So many of my high school classmates in Laredo now work for border patrol, customs, ICE or some type of border security related job. That’s who’s been hiring in Laredo over the last 20 years.
I’ve block walked all over Texas, in the cities and in the rural areas. I’ve block walked in the heat, wind and rain. I’VE NEVER BLOCKWALKED IN THE SNOW!! ❄️❄️❄️

In the 90’s, border security started to increase. You started to see drug dogs, x-ray machines, more technology, more border patrol agents. Then things really changed after September 11, 2001. Money, technology, and personnel started to pour into Laredo.
Nowadays, everyone has to show a passport when they cross into the US, even US citizens. If you do not have it, you will be sent to secondary inspection for questioning. And the bridges are full of electronics that scan both cars and people.
