On this date in 1878, Metropolitan Baptist Church first celebrated the ordinance of baptism for the first time, baptizing Francis McLean who would become the churchโs longstanding clerk.

He had served as pastor of @CHBCdc for just over four years, until his death in 1895. Under his ministry, the membership of Metropolitan grew to 276. His earthly remains were laid to rest at Arlington Cemetery on Monday, July 1.

On June 7, 1895, however, the Evening Star reported that General Smith had fallen ill: "His condition is not regarded as critical, but his family and friends are naturally anxious about him.โ

As a pastor, Green Clay Smith emphasized the importance of โpreaching the gospel as found in the Bible," relationships between church members, and expectation that good will come from โreligious work done in the midst of hardships.โ
