Executive Director Community Schools Trust , former Head of Waterside Academy leading from inadequate to good, previously Head of Forest Gate Community School.
This is my mum. After 30 years as a TA she finishes tomorrow. First to arrive, last to leave and remembers ever child’s name always. Mum on behalf of the thousands of children you have helped to read, count and spell - Thank you. It is never just a job.
We walked into a broken school. Children were on the roof- literally. Parents were angry. Teachers were broken. We put our heart and soul into it .We told students that could achieve better than anyone but it required hardwork and self discipline. It worked.
“School slammed for strict behaviour policy with kids labelled 'detainees' sees GCSE grades soar”
This is what Heads are up against: a culture in society and media that insists good behaviour is a bad thing.
They slam us for doing what us right by kids
I had a great visit today to see the wonderful work of the Michaela team. Lovely students all giggling at their teacher’s jokes. I need to work on my repertoire!
Thrilled to have fellow Heads who ‘get it’ visit Michaela today! 🥰
@charlottewhela
at Hackney New School,
@MissTBegum
at Forest Gate and
@Omar_Deria
at Cumberland.
All doing incredible work in their schools, transforming the lives of disadvantaged kids.
Five things already done to improve workload and wellbeing at my school.
Got rid of retrospective book marking . Reduced data collection. Reduced after school meetings and put them all on Tuesdays. Introduced 4.5 day week, 3 weeks holiday at Christmas. STILL Looking to do more
Over 90% of our students attending the majority of their lessons live online, 100% of our students able to access technology due to our laptop donations, 100% of teachers delivering quality lessons online. We are HNS-tastic !
@hackneynewsch
We’re a friendly school in East London looking for a science teacher. Nice team, friendly students , personable Head (me!). Fancy a tour of the school ? I’ll even make you a cuppa so we can discuss how you can make a difference to the most superb kids ever
#scienceteacher
A midweek birthday during a pandemic which starts with a meeting at 7:30am is certainly made brighter by these bespoke delicious cupcakes.
@hackneynewsch
@CST_London
thanks to
@Geomarz01
for the talent and
@SimonElliottCST
for taking the credit
What a perfect illustration of how the critics of this school who rebelled against its transformation, were completely misguided. A school that was in tatters became an engine of opportunity for its children. Complete solidarity with its staff for doing the hard work, despite the
And that’s a wrap on another academic year. Just realised I’ve completed my 20th academic year today!
Older, wiser but still passionate about the best job in the world and still passionate about the holidays !
Proud of the staff and students
@WatersideAcad
following a busy week including a 2 day Ofsted. A well deserved half term for all could not have come at a better time .
As a leader you find the best people around. The ones better than you. It’s a hard sell- give all of yourself repeatedly, showing up day in day out . Lots of battles- bad buildings, covid, detractors but they come as they believe the kids deserve it

So proud of our
@hackneynewsch
community who have made online learning so successful this week . Our support staff need particular mention as they have made sure students have the right equipment, have FSM, are present to lessons and cared for in school leading to 93% engagement.
Back to teaching more Literature than I’ve done in years. Headship can be all consuming but love having the opportunity to teach my subject and reconnect with why I became a teacher in the first place. It all boils down to a love of words and stories.
Half day Fridays
@hackneynewsch
and
@CST_London
meant that for the first time ever ( in 7 years) I could go to my own child’s sports day . Teachers’ own children so often pull the short straw but witnessing 2 golds and a silver today makes me one proud mummy.
Said goodbye to these two 100% legends today. If a picture painted a thousand words it’s this.
@BarryNSmith79
bought S this t-shirt for S’s birthday in lockdown as it’s his catchphrase. S says
@BarryNSmith79
catchphrases are the reason he got onto his level 1 drama course.
Super proud of staff
@hackneynewsch
who are just THERE for the children. Supporting our most vulnerable and critical workers’ children day in day out. Awesome team
@MissTBegum
will be also introducing us all at the
@CST_London
conference to Playbook 2:0! She also has written lots of brilliant blogs. Tomorrow will be the test of who remembers them. Fabulous prizes up for grabs so get revising !
So proud of
@Mr_Bray1902
and the team
@WatersideAcad
and the students for achieving exceptional outcomes. Given the starting point of this school and the level of deprivation ( 60% +pp) it’s even more remarkable
Another satisfying result for
@FgcsInfo
. So proud to have been Head in this phenomenal place. Putting everything I learned into practice again

Shape, slants and steps training for senior leaders
@hackneynewsch
today - outside with
@BarryNSmith79
. It’s important that senior staff all do the same thing to help and support ALL staff and students. Consistency is key.
Big thank you to all the facilities staff and caretakers who always work hard and have worked extra this week to keep the schools open. Special thanks to
@Julieburman1
and the
@CST_London
site teams . Superstars⭐️
A thought-provoking and poignant speech in assembly this morning from this lady. Students - in front of their peers , speaking confidently demonstrates the journey we never been on over the last two years
@hackneynewsch
Also looking forward to hearing from

annual conference on Friday and Saturday. Rumour has it there are no cogs … but there will be a pyramid.

A stressful week and weekend planning for the unknown made better by a supportive staff team, other leaders in the Trust and my children’s school making it easier. I even got to make dinner with my son tonight. First time in a long time. We’ve got this (for now!)
As a Headteacher you often miss teaching. Was sent this today by
@SarahIBMurphy
as a memory of days gone by when I was doing my thing in the classroom, being quoted in Dylan William’s book on formative assessment and still had my maiden name. Good times
@Miss_Snuffy
Having seen you speaking to students in my own school with warmth about their school lives and future ambitions I know the children at Michaela are getting the very best deal.Most parents want rules and structure for their children as well as the excellent results you secure.
Our new staircase
@WatersideAcad
. Figuratively’a stairway to heaven’ for us book worms and hopefully ‘a step in the right direction’ to encourage reluctant readers.

We shall also be hearing from our CEO Simon Elliott ( not often seen on Twitter) talking about ‘What matters to us‘
@CST_London
Leadership conference this weekend. He has also promised to treat everyone to drink of choice ( in the cafe or bar) if you like and retweet
Told my pupils today about how I was thinking about my grandad’s headteacher today who had to tell his students they had to get on a train to the countryside and stay with strangers for 3 years. You may have to stay at home and log on to google hangouts was easy in comparison.
That 12 year old , who had an EHCP left this year with a fistful of GCSEs thanks to
@Mr_Bray1902
@Shofiquez
and team. The possibilities are endless for him now. It wasn’t looking bright in 2019.
A 12-year-old kid rolled into the school playground on a Santander bike, doing laps around
@SimonElliottCST
and me one morning, eyeing us up. Simon asked the kid where they got the bike and suggested parking it on the side. But this cheeky student, on our very first day of
When your teacher wakes you up in your house in the morning, works with you all of lunchtime and is still there at 6pm helping you. That right there is love.

students have the most dedicated teachers I have ever known

Schools with greater than 40% of their KS4 as disadvantaged, ranked by highest progress 8. Obviously there is always more to the story, but this is ace work.
Don’t forget to tell friends and family about this tomorrow. Highlights include present and past students talking about the school, a virtual tour and the Headteacher’s talk
Students ardently practising their speeches
@hackneynewsch
about the importance of a well rounded education. Both spoke to me about how our focus on oracy has helped both their literacy and their confidence.
Will and Paddy did Wren proud. Putting in two big performances helping Saracens pathway win their game last night.
Will scored two excellent tries and paddy won the player of the match award. Well done both!

Our teachers are always on the threshold
@PetcheyAcademy
and making all the difference to calm and orderly corridors . Welcoming students with a cheery hello too.
@CST_London
Two years ago today we said goodbye to these children. No exams for them. Early days at HNS. Even then you could see the warmth between staff and children .
Virtual year 10 parents’ information evening was a great way to connect with parents this evening
@hackneynewsch
. and talk about how together we can support their children .
Enjoyed working with you on this
@GFrance13
. Thanks to all the other

colleagues who contributed along the way! Looking forward to September
HOT OFF THE PRESS! Our brand new 'Culture Playbook' has arrived 🎉 It's been a labour of love for a year and I cannot wait to share it with everyone when we get back in September 💚💚

Love reading on Twitter the posts about NQTs getting their first job. It’s a hard job but the best job in the world. I love every minute.... even the hard ones.
Last train breakfast today on my final trip to
@UTCNorfolk
for this academic year. Had a ball going up there each week and looking forward to more fun next year!

This is often the way I view students’ work
@hackneynewsch
