That's it. The Kyoto arc is about Rin and Shiemi. It's about Bon's family - not Bon himself (his character arc begins after the Illuminati).It's about finding and losing purpose. But mostly it's about understanding. Peace out- 🫡.End 🧵.

-proclaiming his desire to be with her, or his jealousy over Yukio's relationship with her, or even his reaction to her calling him her friend; to him, she's been his friend since day 1. It's a true slowburn. And we all know where that eventually lead to. 😌.

I do believe that this here is when Rin truly realized his feelings for her. He was interested in her previously of course, but from a first crush I think from this point on it grew into something stronger, that's only grown stronger since, hence why we see him more outwardly-

And this, here, is especially important; the thought of Shiemi is the only one to break through Demon Rin's influence, and to warm up his flames. It's no wonder Demon Rin only acknowledges her strength when he shows up! She is, basically, his only equal.

-Rin needed to speak to. Because Shiemi, in the end, is the only one who understands him, truly. Shiemi feels useless and weak - Rin struggles to find a reason to live and be useful. The choice of words here is important; they mirror one another in their struggles and pains.

-in this arc, and where Shiemi makes up her mind; after all this time of wanting to be useful and be of help, she does just that. She's the first one to say to help him, and the only one who is able to get through the demon gate to him, and the one that-

And while they're doing all of this, they have no hand in the main plot going on in Kyoto. They're busy doing their own thing, and untangling their feelings. They get caught up to it when Rin is apprehanded after Bon's freak out with his dad, and that's Rin at his lowest-.

Rin, on the other hand, sees Shiemi as hardworking and sees her strive to be better and to be stronger, but while he also sees how destructive it is on her, he also allows it to motivate himself in doing better too, such as going back to training upon seeing her working hard.

Shiemi sees Rin as this beacon she hasn't reached, and she doesn't see his flames as something to be scared of, which is where the train scene comes into play and why it's a shame it was cut from the anime; Shiemi's always known his flames were warm. She was never scared of him.

-but Rin is also guilty of it too, and mostly thinking lowly of himself in general and using himself as a shield, whereas Shiemi falsely believes herself to be too far behind to be worth it. However, as we know, they're both thinking the opposite of the other-.

Despite not being able to talk, they're also able to motivate the other to get stronger and do better, for good or worse. This theme of feeling behind and needing to be at a better place before being able to stand before the other is prevalent especially in Shiemi's case-

-their silence; Rin to busy himself with training, and Shiemi with work, but both are continually thinking of the other and focussing on their own guilt, which prevents them from speaking until way later during the Kyoto trip. However, as you can see.

From that point on, Rin and Shiemi tried to talk, but each time were interrupted, or couldn't find the words. Yukio stopping them, Shiemi's guilt, Rin's silence - neither of them hated the other one bit over what happened, they were both mad at themselves, and so retreated in-

It's basically their "breakup" arc; from the moment they were separated on that bridge, they were unable to explain themselves to one another properly. You can see here, they wanted to keep talking, but they were both dragged off and away, hence the awkwardness later.
