Just on this, we’ve probably reached the point where draft picks should be discussed in terms of number rather than round. For example, receiving two top-10 picks isn’t the same as receiving two picks in the late teens or 20s, even though all four are R1 picks by definition.

100% agree. The absolute worst thing for Essendon to do right now would be to act like everything is fine and dandy because Zach Merrett is still there. Hawthorn’s approach showed a lack of respect, which is a direct result of the dysfunction at the club. Time to get to work.

Offering what it did after so long and then it coming with a threat of the offer expiring just hours after it was delivered showed that Hawthorn was never going to negotiate in good faith. Essendon’s response makes sense.
Essendon was so dismissive of Hawthorn’s offer - believing it was well off the mark - that it never actually responded formally. @FootyonNine @1116sen @9NewsMelb
