Like a rocket. This is the Sykes Monument at Garton in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It is 37 metres high and was built in 1865, in memory of Sir Tatton Sykes, 4th Baronet (1772-1863), by "those who loved him as a friend and honoured him as a landlord".

Some villagers, including servants of John Birch's son (who had erected the monument), came armed with clubs and threatened the Bishop's men. A serious assault occurred in the churchyard, and the Bishop's party came under further attack as they left the village.

The inscription on his monument at Weobley (Herefordshire) was considered a slight against Charles I and, at the instigation of the minister and churchwardens, the Bishop of Hereford went to Weobley in May 1694 to supervise the defacement of the panel.

The monument that caused a riot. Colonel John Birch (d.1691) supported Parliament during the Civil War and became a captain in the Bristol Militia. His greatest military achievement was the capture of Hereford in 1645 after which he became governor of the city.

It was saved after much of the medieval glass from Salisbury Cathedral was thrown into the town ditch during James Wyatt's brutal restoration of the church in 1788–91. This panel greatly influenced the artist John Piper (1903-1992).

An amazing survival. This panel dates from c.1230 and depicts the stoning to death of St Stephen. The text below the figures is in Lombardic letters and reads ‘STEPHANUS ORANS EXPIRAT’ (Stephen dies while praying). The panel is in Grateley church, Hampshire.

Change / no change. Two scenes from the medieval wall paintings in the church at Hailes, Gloucestershire; St Katherine and an owl. The photographs on the left were taken in 1972, while those on the right are from 2012, respectively. There appears to be little deterioration.
