The men didn't have top-secret level clearance, but that doesn't seem to matter, one said he could offer top secret material. They also didn't get paid much - $1800 here for a military computer, $500 for a document. (3/6).

Active duty soldiers handed classified & sensitive material to a former soldier, who in turn sold it to another unknown buyer in China - in some cases, it was sent via Google Drive links - or just by taking photos of computers under surveillance cameras. (2/6)

These people are also stepping into U.S. at such a fraught political moment, when the percieved line between Chinese migrant and Chinese spy feels razor thin - w the end to visa-free entry to Ecuador and new deportation flights to China - the future of this route is in flux.
