Everyone likes to laugh, but humor is not the key to advancing in the workplace. @PeterMcGraw, Adam Barsky, and I explain why here:

Coolness isn’t just a vibe—it’s measurable and surprisingly consistent across cultures. I spoke with @USATODAY's The Excerpt about our global study on the 6 traits that cool people share:

We found a similar pattern in Australia, Chile, China, Germany, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Spain, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, and the United States. The characteristics associated with cool people also did not depend on the gender, age, or education of the respondent.

People perceived to be cool are extroverted, adventurous, open, autonomous, powerful, and hedonistic. These characteristics distinguish people seen as cool from people seen as not cool as well as from people seen as favorable or good.

What makes someone cool? Do the characteristics of cool people differ across cultures? My co-authors and I attempted to answer these questions by running experiments in 12 countries. Surprisingly, we find that cool people have the same six characteristics in every country. [1/4]

Why aren't articles accepted at marketing journals? I've reviewed 300 papers and noticed four problems that most frequently lead to a submission being rejected. I write about what they are and how to fix them here:

Why are we embarrassed when we fall over? And why do other people find it funny? I got to spend a day with a clown learning to fall over, all in the name of CrowdScience. And I spoke to some fantastic scientists too. @seankempton @calebwarren https://t.co/N4yH61HMgP

Is humor the secret to being happy? Probably not, but it's a good sign that you're having fun. I recently joined the Happiness Science Labs for a longer conversation about this:

Excellent article discussing one of my favorite research papers, which explains why we watch Sharknado, listen to Rebecca Black, wear ugly sweaters, and otherwise choose things that are so bad they're good:
